Not good blood work from Rifabutin

My wbc and platelets were low and liver functions high. My doctor told me to come off the Rifabutin.

I was on that and Clarithromycin for over a month. On day 6 I was very very ill with a temp of over 100 and chills. I spent the weekend if my birthday in bed thinking I was gonna have to go to ER. Horrible body aches and fatigue. The temp lowered and the chills gone after a few days. But the fatigue and body pain stayed. My llmd doesn't believe this was a herx but rather my WBC getting low. I was nauseated too. I'd eat very little and would feel suddenly and painfully so full.

She wants to repeat my blood work in a week and go from there.

I'm devastated to say the least. I just want to get better. I can barely function at work and when I get home I just sleep. My anxiety and depression has been through the roof.

that sounds like a pretty typical herx like reaction - fever - body aches - fatigue

all is not lost

you may just need to start at lower doses and work you way up

many here are in the same boat - including myself - i have however made progress with both herbs and antibiotics by working my way up - or adding one at a time

Have you tried Rifampin? Perhaps it would be easier on you?

I found Rifampin “milder” than rifabutin.

I had treated bart with Rifampin and then over a year later treated with Rifabutin and I had a fever for the first time - a fever is a common herx symptom.
I felt horrible and almost went t the ER.

I continued taking the Rifabutin and the herx got less in severity over time.

I was on a pulsed schedule so was only taking Rifabutin 6 days a month.
I don’t know if I could have handled daily dosing

Sorry you are having a really rough spell and had a crappy birthday. Happy Birthday 🎉. Maybe you can do something special to celebrate when you feel better again. This will pass. It’s a bumpy ride. Just hang on.
