Help! Can oregano cause herxing?

My Lyme doc had me start on probiotics and oregano. Nothing else.
Since I have begun taking ADP by Biotics Research Corp which is essentially emulsified oil of oregano in tablet form, my tolerable joint pain and mood issues along with all but 3 symptoms on Dr. S. questionnaire form went from being infrequent and tolerable to a debilitating nightmare!

Since taking the oregano, I have:

Pain bottom of feet can't even rest them on the bed

Frequent episodes of being unable to swallow. My throat muscles won't listen to my brain or something. This had only happened twice ever before. Now it is daily.

Head and throat go numb. This will cause inabity to swallow also.

Tingly Numbing from forehead to back of head.

Knees feel like kneecaps are floating and will pop off. Excruciatingly painful.

Legs sometimes quit working...knees buckle and I fall. (Haha! I have a funny story about this. It involves an entire gallon of paint, stairs, and me...inside my house! :-/)

Fingertips feel bruised/burned/sore

Joint pain like crazy it used to be occasional heel pain, one in a while my knees. Always my hip. My hip rarely hurts now but the rest of my joints have migrating searing pain.

Eye and ear stabbing pains/headaches.

"Nap hangovers" so much worse than ever before.

So fatigued. More than ever.

Sometimes cant breathe. Not asthma (which I have) but like chest is too heavy or something

Severe rotator cuff pain

Claustrophobia

Panic attack occurs after my head goes numb. I've had anaphylactic reactions b4 and they haven't scared me but this terrifies me.


IS THIS NORMAL???????? Can you herx on oregano alone?!?!

Hi there,
How many tablets are you taking and how many days did you take the adp before the symptoms got worse? Sorry you are going through this.
Just started these yesterday for dd. she sees a dc. I will email him and ask about reactions and get back to you.

What you are describing are the symptoms that I had whilst on Doxy :-(

Are you detoxing? If you are herxing from Oregano,you have got to get the toxins out of your poor body otherwise your symptoms will persist.

I started on 6/29/13. I woke up a week later with over 100 petuchiae. Within a few days of taking it, I had moderate heel pain. For the last week, I have been in excruciating pain that migrates. However, there was one day almost completely pain free last week. Weird. After that, I crashed. I am taking 50 mg oregano (standardized extract from leaf) four times a day. So 200mg every day.

Does this stuff kill off spirochetes, too? Or is it just yeast die off?!

I really didnt think I was that unhealthy! I make all my food from scratch and use organic produce. I eat few carbs and rarely eat sugary foods. I never eat processed foods. Yuck.

I was in good shape except for what I thought was bursitis of the hip.
(Although, I recently was told I now have a heart murmur.)

I read these stories and you guys make me scared! Are there any success stories here?!?! These stories are so heartbreaking! I wish you all good health.

My LD has me on oregano to detox. ???

Is there something else I can do to lessen these miserable symptoms?

Yes, oregano oil can cause herxing. Make sure you always take this supplement with food.

But if I were you, I'd cut back to once a day...too much herxing can cause damage.

No appetite so I haven't been taking it with food. Uh oh! Is that important and why?

That must be some strong oregano you got there. Like Razzle said you need to cut down the dosage and work it up slowly. Eventually you should be able to get back to the 200mg. but right now you're killing too many chetes for your body to handle.

Taking it with food improves absorption and protects your stomach lining from damage.

Yes, as ToddPaul said - the oregano oil is very strong and can burn the stomach lining if not taken with food.

How are you doing now Mom? Did you cut back on the dose? I started the A.D.P. a week ago and also am herxing a lot with bad fatigue mostly upon awakening and increased head discomfort. I think this is really powerful stuff and must be hitting the Lyme and/or co-infections.

Hi Todd!

Yes, the doc cut my dosage in half. The herxing is less. Now it's mostly killer pain in my heels. And my knees don't always cooperate. The fatigue stayed about the same. But at least I am not staring at my car keys trying to figure out how to unlock the door or completely disoriented. The buzzing in my ears has lessened a lot, too.

I am shocked at how powerful this stuff really is!!

I have an appointment this Wednesday. Yay. Hope to get more answers.

In other news, my kids are having difficulties with their meds. My one daughter had to stop Mepron. She was looking jaundiced. We have to get blood work done.

My other daughter is having difficulty tolerating Bactrim. We may have to take it out of her treatment regimen for good. She keeps getting this tongue that looks just like a strawberry along with a strong metallic taste.

It seems to be never ending Lyme and Co drama here! Haha.

I hope you can kick your Lyme and Co, Todd!!!

I am hoping to hear some great success stories on this board!!

Hey Mom. Are you still around? I stopped the A.D.P. after reading about it being controversial with taking it long-term but thinking about going back on it. I feel it's essential to killing the little buggers and getting better. One study showed the carvacrol component to be stronger than 18 different abx. Anyway, how are you and your daughters doing? Still taking the oregano?

My dd 9 was on one tab a day for about three weeks. I was to concerned about her taking long term. Dr wanted me to increase to two day, but never did. But not sure how on long term is? I do think it helped. She did herx a little. She was hyper. But pretty happy. A couple days she was grumpy but very mild.
She is now on beyond balance bb1 and bar1. Again hyper, but that claimed down after about 5 days.

How is everyone doing on ADP? My HERX symptoms  got increasingly worse each day that I took it....50 mg pills 4 times a day.....I started Wednesday August 21 with 2 pills, then after 2 days went to 3, 2 days later went to 4....

Very fatigued to the point that I cannot raise my hands over my head without thinking about it.....headaches, left eye pain, hot and cold sensations ( making my wife crazy with the thermostat control on the AC....LOL), increased rashes on my chest including red pin pricks, lack of appetite, some BART like Rash lines on chest...Other than that, I have been GREAT!!!  LOL   Seriously, I have NEVER been this sick in  my life.....

Yesterday I took my last Doxy pill from my regular Dr as my LLMD told me to finish all that was prescribed to me....I am awaiting results from Igenex with a preliminary DX of Lyme with Babs from the LLMD....I also presented with oral Thrush and was advised to increase Probiotics by the LLMD....

I have heard of the "DOXY Herx" and it looks like I will be off ABX for the next 3 weeks until I get back to the LLMD with the results....This round of Doxy was for 2 weeks prescribed by Family Dr since June 4 for a grand total of 5 weeks out of the last 10....(stop and go treatment).....

I am also cutting back the ADP (oil of oregano) to 2 pills a day to see if I can function better....

I soak in my bath each nite for 20 minutes in 98 degree water with Epsom salt and peroxide...

Looking for any comments .....Thank You all very much.....

Hey Mike. I started the ADP up again on the 23rd with 4 a day with just mild back pain which is a common herx for me. Surprisingly, that was my only herx and the back pain has already disappeared. The last time I took the ADP it kicked my butt pretty good (headaches, fatigue, back pain) even though I generally don't herx much as my symptoms are fairly mild.

I called the company and spoke with a Dr. there and she recommended 3-5 tabs with each meal to treat Lyme. I know it sounds pretty unimaginable to take so much but it can eventually be worked up to that level. I'm on about 7 a day now and feeling ok.

See if 2 a day isn't killing you otherwise you may have to stop and do a washout period where you take a break for a bit as sometimes you won't herx as much when you go back on as is the case with me now.

Thanks ToddPaul.....was kicking my butt BIG time....I started on 2 a day today, took my 1st pill at around 2pm with food and had a mild herx about 3 hours later....Also, my last Doxy was last night at Midnite as I have no more left.....Just ADP, probiotics and Epson salt baths with peroxide every night until I see my LLMD in 3 weeks.....I hope to raise the level up again as you did, but man, I just needed a break....LOL     The ADP is potent stuff in my opinion....Thanks for answering...appreciate it....

Hey ToddPaul. How's the ADP going? I'm back up to taking 4 a day and today was a real winner. Fatigued like crazy and my appetite is the pits..Not sure if its the ADP...Anyway, how ru making out on it? Let's all get better!!

Mike, stopped it about 4 weeks ago as it was gassing me up big time. I was taking about 5 a day at the time. I've done well with the Now brand Cat's Claw extract caps and Banderol. That combo has seemed to clear my fluey or sick feeling I'd get around evening or dinner time with basically no herx.

I have just ordered some really potent oil of oregano (100% undiluted), and will be seeing how much of a herx reaction I get from that. Recently, I have been mixing olive oil with lemon/lime/grapefruit/orange juice (whatever I have available) in a high speed blender with cat's claw, and that has been giving me really strong herx-like reactions.

I'm sure the oregano will kick my butt. =P

Mom of 6, I make an herbal shot of fresh herbs, one of them is oregano and I herx so hard when I take it it is head to toe symptoms instantly. Oregano, from what Ive read, is an antibacterial and an anti parasitic. I had no idea about the power of oregano until recently. Im sorry to hear you are having the same thing, but it is nice to see this brought up. My man has lymes symptoms in the last year but hasn't been diagnosed, but oregano makes him feel pain in his back and have to vomit sometimes. It makes me wonder if people without lymes ever have similar reactions to fresh or oil extracts of oregano.

I know this post is like years old. I just took 1 drop of wild crafted oregano oil and I herxed instantly and felt it working through my body. I had shortness of breath my heart was pounding and anxiety panic attack because I felt I couldn't breath. It was scary and I popped half a benedryl to make sure I wasn't allergic. I'm super sensitive to most antimicrobials and idk what it was killing off bt it hit pretty hard. I tried taking it for yeast, sibo, parasites for starters .

Can oil of oregano damage the intestinal wall or esophagus beyond repair? That stuff is a whole lot more spicy than a Carolina reaper to say the least!
How are we supposed to take this stuff? 4 drops per day, 3 days per week for 2 weeks max?

After orally pulsing OoO 3 times per week I get some pretty painful intestines for a day or two after the third dose. I assume this is normal? It's pretty uncomfortable.
Can OoO kill the gut if you overdo it? This stuff is hell of a potent!
