I just came out of the GAPs ketogenic diet recently on my 1y anniversary. I had done 6m as well before that, w/ a 3m gap in between the 1y and the 6m, so 18m total.
I have noticed that GAPs is very good for arthritic symptoms, mostly because it limits triggers. Immediately upon coming out, my arthritis acted up. I think certain foods, especially grains and dairy, trigger the cytokine cascade due to their antiginetic status within the faulty immune system. It's worth a try for anyone w/ inflammatory arthritis.
Initially I thought it was helping my neuro symptoms, and I did feel quite better intitially, but eventually plateaued and later retraced all neuro gains. I've come to realize i just have an antibody against the nerves, and diet was unable to heal that, for me at least. And this makes sense.
The other unfortunate part is that it did not change my autoimmune blood markers. Although at times while on the diet my WBC did climb higher than it's ever been (always below a 3.5 for 10y pre-diet, on the diet had a print as high as a 5.5), it was volatile for some reason, my ANA stayed positive and other abnormalities persisted.
Some benefits are that my A1C did drop from a 5.5 to a 4.9. I got pretty ripped and vascular and generally healthier and younger looking. Initially i lost weight, dropped from 163 down to 155. But over time my stools completely solidified and i gained weight back. Up to about
168.
The fact that my antibody bloodwork and neuropathy didnt really improve materially or permanently after 1.5y, beyond the benefit of just feeling better overall, was enough to convince me that I wasn’t going to stop the neuropathy this way, and that I could loosen up a bit. I plan on staying GAPs for most of the time, because its just the way I eat now, and it benefits my arthritis, but I will allow myself a cheat, maybe a few fries or a piece of gluten-free bread with brunch, for example.
Also, I did a low oxalate version most of the time. You can do low histamine if necessary, wasnt a problem for me. For 3m of it I actually did carnivore.
