My 5 1/2 year old son has been sick off and on for about a month.

My husband is at the Dr's now but this is what we have been dealing with.

October 2nd - In the evening, had a fever of 102

October 3rd - Fever subsided but then he started to vomit in the morning - 4 times. By the afternoon he was his normal self.

October 4th - Woke up at 12:30 AM vomiting bile and got sick 4 more times. Around 3:45 AM, he vomited again and this time, there were "coffee grounds" in his vomit. At 4:00 AM, he vomited again and now there were pieces of bright red blood. We took him to the ER and the Dr. thought it was his sinus?? Gave him anti vomit pill and sent us home. He slept most of the day.

Week of October 5th - Christopher was gagging while eating and drinking, doing a lot of belching. Took Christopher to the see Dr. Yin on October 6th due to his gagging. She felt the blood in his vomit was possibly a small tear in his esophagus. At the request of parents, she prescribed Prevacid. We started Christopher on Prevacid that week and continue to do so.

October 9th - Christopher got a cold and had a clear runny nose, we gave him Bromethane which helped.

October 11th - Christopher again had a fever of 101, no other symptoms, gave him Motrin and fever subsided.

October 15th - Christopher came home from school, had a good day but then all of a sudden, started to vomit and threw up 4 times. No other symptoms and by early evening, he was his normal self.

October 16th - Christopher again had a fever, although low at 100.4, it is still another fever.

October 17th - Christopher felt warm this evening but no fever.

October 18th - Christopher woke up at 3:30 AM with a 101.5 fever, he had energy and did not fall back to sleep until 4:30 PM. His fever had subsided.

October 19th - Woke up at 7:30 AM and was not himself, rolling and moaning. He got out of bed but could only walk on his knees. He started to vomit and got sick 6 more times. We then gave him the anti-vomit pill and he got sick again but it appears the pill stayed down somehow. He fell asleep on the couch, very lethargic. Woke up at 12:30 PM and was walking (a little wobbly due to weakness) and then was his normal self. Requested plenty of fluids and crackers and some cookies. We gave him Cheerios for dinner and he was not interested but ate most of the bowl.

October 20th - Woke up at 7:30 AM and appears to be his normal self but now has a cold again.

During the dates above, Christopher has not had his normal appetite, there were days where he would not even request cookies. Meal times have been difficult, he is gagging and not wanting to eat. We still continue the prevacid but something is not right. He has been sick way too much for the first half of this month. I called his teacher and other than some runny noses, no one is sick with stomach issues. His BMs have been normal as well. He has also had some bad bloody noses as well.

Any suggestions???

I am certainly no expert but it is not similar to my family's experience with Lyme. Have you had a full blood workup, including Igenex tests for lyme and coinfections? Fifteen days of vomiting seems like a long time. I would try to research all of the illnesses that can have vomiting for this length of time and I would do tons of testing to try to rule things out.

Sorry your little guy is so sick. I know how hard it is to see you child suffer. I hope you get to the bottom of it soon.

We just had a full work up done today (Lyme included) and are awaiting results.  They are also testing him for mono as well.  The other issue is my son is autistic and  non-verbal so e can't tell us how he is feeling, it's a guessing game for us and the doctors.

Hi - just to clarify - the lyme testing should be done through Igenex labs in CA, which is less likely to have a false negative test. The typical lyme tests done through Quest and Labcorp are often negative when a patient is truly positive, so if you get a negative result, the test does not really mean much.

In general the testing is not that accurate for lyme disease and you really need to see a lyme-literate physician (LLMD) to rule out lyme. The diagnosis for lyme is based on clinical symptoms, of which there are probably 100 different symptoms.

Also, they have found in some studies that 30% of autistic kids test positive for lyme. There does seem to be some kind of link, so I would definitely see an LLMD, NOT an infectious disease doctor!

If you do think lyme might be even a slight possibility, you might consider making an appointment with Dr. Charles Ray Jones in New Haven, CT. He is, according to many, the best lyme pedicatrician in the country. My three children see him.

Do you know if your son is possibly being exposed to mold anywhere.? The nosebleeds say to mold to me...or possible other allergy. My toxic mold exposure caused nose bleeds, fever and vomiting.

The part about the coffee grounds and blood in his vomit. Very odd. That does not sound right. My baby got lyme at 11 mos and again this summer. But I never saw coffee grounds or blood. I would have freaked.
A high fever would cause nausea in most kids..but that is sooooo odd. And franky scary to me.

I would get all of the blood work done and bowl and honestly. I would catch the vomit in a bucket and and do some sample...or two together and get it checked out.

I would find take him and his vomit to a really good Dr.
If he if throwing up blood and coffee grounds. My gosh...did you got to the emergency room?

We did go to the ER and did take the sample of his vomit.  They said it appeared to be a slight tear in his esophagas.  We got the blood work back and it was normal, thank God but were are waiting on the Lymes report today.

Hi Chris,
If your son's MD has not referred you to a pediatric gastroenterologist yet, then I would demand one right away! He's too young to have tears in his esophagus without a good reason. He may need endoscopy done where they look down throat into his stomach. And watch what he may be eating; toys, etc..

THere is a lyme literate pediatric gastro doctor in Neptune, NJ. His name is Dr. F. He would probably be a good one to go to in order to get the stomach testing done. Let me know if you would like more info.
