I have been on my pill for 12 years now and never had break through bleeding.....now that i have lyme and on doxy and cef...are they weakening my pill and thats why i am spotting? my boyfriend and i havnt been using a back up protection and now i am worried :(

A friend of mine got pregnant while on the pill after taking antibiotics for  strep throat, so YES they can affect the way the birth conrol pill works, dont ask me how. But, she has a beautiful daughter to prove it! Better use condoms or something "extra" while you are in treatment  to be safe. Take care  D

wow really i didnt think that it could really happen. I spoted for a bit and now i am not anymore. i told my boyfried that we have to be carfeul and use condoms and he said ok. we are both not ready to have a child. we havnt been together that long and we both live at home. i live with my sis and her fam and he lives with his parents. I just hope that I am not pregnant...i dought i am bt i feel like my body wants to get my period....what could i use that was something EXTRA?

i would not bother with the pill. it will make your lyme worse, and it will not work anyways with the abx. so why bother taking something that is bad for you, like read the box of the pills. there are other forms of birth control and i am sure your boyfriend will be willing to try them so that he too will not catch the lyme from you.

my boyfriend can catch my lyme i didnt think it was proven ...?

hi jennie48:as the others wrote the pill may not protect you when you are on abx; and then there is this assumption that lyme could be transmitted sexually; there is no proof that this is impossible as far as I know. the use of condoms is the "better safe than sorry" road.

WHOA. Ok so after looking into this I've ready conflicting things. Lyme may or may not be sexually transmitted? You're right dorit, it is better to be safe than sorry. We started using condoms as soon as I got the diagnosis of lyme. BUT - I had lyme anywhere from 4-6 months before I was diagnosed. Is it possible that my boyfriend could have gotten it from me during that time? Should he get tested for lyme?

This makes my stomach turn - I will feel absolutely horrible if he got lyme from me.

I dont know exactly how the pill makes Lyme worse, but I mean, lets face it, everyone knows that the pill has side effects, right? If the gyns are not telling you that, they should be! Condoms have been around for a million years ladies, must be a reason.  (:

abanana07 and jennie48- I am in a similar position than you are, means: they tested me for Lyme (this spring) because I had developed a typical skin symptom which is connected with late stage lyme; a lot of different other symptoms I had were typical for lyme too; I am married since 10 years now, we were using condoms most of the time because I cannot go with the pill - but not always; as long as my husband develops no symptoms, he will not have the test. He got a tick bite some years ago, never got ill but he could still have a positive IGG in the elisa / westernblot if the tick had carried the spirochetes. I am no doc and I only can contribute here that my research on this question came out as " everything is possible, nobody knows"
BUT: we need to keep our adrenaline under control .... so I recommend: be cautious AND do not think the worst case is going to happen. Sounds strange, but it really helped me a lot not to feel too helpless with all these uncertainties and unanswered questions around Lyme
The question of testing the partners is a very very personal decision - maybe you can discuss this with your LLMD.

hezzer926 - I found nothing that says the pill makes lyme sxs (this abbr. means "symptoms" - am I right?? ) worse; a lady of the local lsg (<--lyme support group) told me that some women stopped taking the pill because they want to avoid stuff being in their bodies that cause "chemically feigned pregnancies", that is how they call it.
