I think by now we all know there is a correlation with hormones, mentrual cycle and lyme symptoms, but does anyone else get menstral migraines? I used to blame them on LD, but now I am not so sure as they come on day 2 of my cycle every month and they are a killer. But just curious if I am the only one because my focus maybe should be on the hormonal migraines.

Hi Jeminij.  A good friend of mine who has Lyme had these migraines for several months, but they seem to have stopped now.

I know they are very intense.  How long do they last?

I hope they let up soon.

I used to get menstrual migraines & cramps until I stopped eating gluten (wheat, rye, barley) and corn. Now, the only time I get a menstrual migraine is if I accidentally ingest or inhale something containing gluten.

Are you on any type of hormone birth control? I was on the Patch and that gave me god-awful migraines- also like clockwork on Day 2.
I ended up having to come off of that b/c they pain was horrendous.

Now I just get the happy Lyme hormone menstrual mix. scool

No, I am not on any birth control. I stopped them long ago due to migraines. I have had them for years and they last about 3 full days, but they are on schedule every month to a tee so I don't think at this point they are lyme related. I think I just blamed them on lyme becuase I wasn't sure what else would be causing them. I am sure there is a link. I had them bad when I had lyme really bad, but when I get well, they went away for almost 3 years. Seems like since having my baby last year, they are back every month. Too much to figure out I swear.

Hi Jeminij,

I would very much like to hear what kind of results you will come up with for the migraine headaces during your cycle, I get high blood pressure for 2 days the day before and the first day of my cycle,I think I was thinking Lyme Disease for a too long time, I did do some adrenal testing but not sure I did the right tests, and just like you I sure do wonder what is causing this, please let us know if you come up with an answer

Menstrual migraines are typically caused by plunging estradiol levels and are common during perimenopause- what age are you? Lyme disease taxes the adrenals and can cause hormone deficiencies. Lyme also interferes with estrogen metabolism in the liver ......You can measure estradiol by a blood test around day 2 or day of your symptoms- if it is below 60 pg/ml you will benefit from a little transdermal estradiol compounded skin cream around the first week of your period. Also check an RBC magnesium level- it should be >4.8 nmol/L - low Mg is common in Lyme and can cause migraine -- but because yours are day 2, suspect estradiol deficiency.
