Anybody have any dogs with Lyme?

i have a few questions..

i tested my dog for lyme 2 weeks ago at the vet and they used this rapid testing, where they took blood and put it on a little panel that would turn blue if neg, it did turn blue.. but i'm thinking its false also.. how accurate are these tests at the vet? if they are false, how do we find out if my dog has been co infected? because i'm sure the test is only for lyme. i'm just confused.. he's been doing fine but has been having some joint pains lately, and had some superfical marks on him.. that looked like a severe itch reaction..

i'm going back to the vet tomorrow to check up and have him looked over again, what questions can i bring to the table... as how reliable was that test.. and does it test for co infections, and what meds do dogs take for lyme/co infections..

my dog, rocco is my lifeline sort of speak.. mans best friend, and even if i got lyme from him, i'm not mad..

james i have 2 dogs. my male who is my best friend for real, tested positive last yr. my female was neg. the test they used was a 3 in 1 test for heartworms it also tested for lyme. he was placed in abx for a month and then retested again 3 months later. he showed its body was fighting it so he didnt need any more meds.

does your dog have a dry cough too? mine does and he also has a enlarge heart now. but then again its normal in very large breeds and he is almost 11 y/o now.

i pray your baby is fine and stays that way.

many times when i am down he will place his head in my lap and i wonder if he hurts as badly as i do.

Oh RD. That breaks my heart.

James, I undertand how you feel and hope Rocco is not infected. Our pets are our family and I hate to say it but sometimes even more important in my eyes.

yeah he is, more important to me than almost anything i can think of right now.. he keeps me going.. me and him have been through alot of stuff togther... i mean a ton.. he has been by my side for 6 years.. i got him when he was 8 weeks old and haven't looked back since...


so i'll have him re tested tomorrow again for heartworm and lyme.. and ask to have him put on ABX just incase..

he doesn't have a dry cough yet, i hope he doesn't man that would suck.....


when he lays his head down on my lap, i always wonder if he feels my pain, or if he is in pain also.. that kinda hit home with me also...

it breaks my heart to, i even used the money i had saved up for glasses on him and his vet bills for his treatment. i dont need to see..lol

his health wasnt a option tho. me and him have been thro so much. he has been in all but 7 states so he could of got it like me in N.J. my female who doesnt have it has lived in Tx all her life. she is almost 3 y/o now

i agree with you there scorpio, blue is like my child and best friend all rooled up into 1.

funny thing is when i walked out on my ex, blue was waiting at the truck ready to go...lol

i walked out on my ex too.. rocco was 1 year old then, i said hey buddy, guess what, your going with me.. i didn't give my ex a choice.. i brought him home and i'm taking him with me.. it was the best decision i ever made..

i thought about it for a sec, do i let her keep him, because i don't know if i could watch him die.. or do i take him and have the best years with him until his time comes...

i didn't care, i saw him as being my brother or best friend.. he is my family, i'm sorry he comes with me.. i told her you can see him if you want, but she never did, i think she was scared to see him and re-miss him again.. but i made the choice for both of us and moved on.. and now i have lyme.. LOL>>> o well.... i'd rather deal with lyme than have rocco deal with it.... if he has it, i will be relentless also with him..

BTW. HE is a YOrkie.. i know i know....

my ex drove 350 miles once to see blue. i told em you want visition pay dog support..hehe he never did and also never came to see him again. woohooo lol

James, My dog is 3 years old. She was having symptoms of lameness a rash and fatique in December and tested negative for Lyme but positive for anaplasmosis which I believe is a form of erlichiosis as it attacks the white blood cells. She was put on doxy for a month and appears to be better. She was limping last fall so I think she had Lyme as well.

What I can say about dogs with Lyme is this. My last dog tested positive when she was 4 years old. She was treated with only 2 weeks of doxy because in those days I didn't know anything about Lyme. She lived to the age of 17 and has not many symptoms through the years she was alive. So it seems if they get treatment they fare alot better than we do. Blessings

i agree with you. my vet told me when they retested blue's blood that his antibodies was fighting it and he tested for low lyme then.

i also asked about my cat. and the vet told me there wasnt 1 reported case of a cat with lyme. maybe we need cats blood injected to kill the lyme. hehe

RD I have 2 friends who have cats that are being treated for Lyme. Most Lyme information will tell you that cats and dogs can contract Lyme. I guess the Vets in your part of the woods are as much in the dark about Lyme as the human md's are.

i tryed to upload the pics of my babies but it wouldnt let me :(. in a way its kinda nice to talk about our babies then lyme for a change. this relaxed me.

did you know Tx is its own country, or so it thinks anyways..lol and i am in the sticks really even if amarillo is the largest city around these parts. i am so tired of the backwater country bumpkin bull. its pass time the south caught up to the rest of the country.

with that said. i am going to try to sleep as i have been up for 2 days now.

i watch that show too. i did work at a no kill shelter 3 yrs ago. and i am sure they would love to have you there. its very pretty up there too.

I am a dog lover, too. I shouldn't even start in about dogs because I would never be able to stop. I used to do some volunteer work -- fighting legislation, helping the rescues. Once, I went into KC's inner city in the worst neighborhoods w/ a group who visits thru there regularly, helping to get dogs off chains, helping get them into the homes when possible, donating dog houses and straw, making sure dogs (and cats too) had fresh food and water, hanging fly traps, giving them ear salve for bites, etc etc etc. It's a bottomless pit out there. I even threw a couple of hot dogs into a yard where 2 pits were chained to the front porch, chomping at the bit, obviously used as guard dogs. Probably drugs, because mattresses covered the windows.

But I fell apart after losing a job and after the bite I believe gave me lyme. It really depresses me to be of no help to anybody. If I won Powerball, I would happily spend the rest of my life doing rescue work. My heart literally bleeds for dogs, they rip my heart to pieces!

See, I should not have started, so there will be no more from me about dogs -- except, James, what a cutie pie. And how did you put your pic up? And my dogs are a pit/lab mix, and what I call a black half coyote, half kangaroo. I live in a large apartment (which is the safest place for a well cared for pit mix these days), so my time must be devoted to getting them out to meet people and other dogs w/ plenty of exercise. (just came back from a swim on the off leash canine beach.)


But my heart still aches for them -- I know they would love to do some agility and activities that challenge them and I am just a big dud. EVery day I promise to do better.

I used to LOVE this, I used to live for these times together, but no longer get any enjoyment out of it (the hiking, etc) I drag myself along w/ my walking stick and tho it makes me very happy to see my dogs running and chasing and wrestling and leaping thru the air, it's just become such a chore. I am wondering if enjoyment of any activities returns after a certain amount of treatment? This past year I have not gotten any enjoyment from anything, not even stuff that should be fun.

I love hearing you all talk (I mean write-lol) about your dogs and efforts to help them. I'm also a big dog lover and my dream was always to open a luxury kennel/doggie day care. A friend and I even went looking at places a year before I became too sick to work any longer. Our goal was to eventually open a shelter with some of the profits. I occasionally use to volunteer at an animal shelter and now my goal is to get well enough to at least do that again.

btw. i did have the vet send off co infections tests to the lab in texas i believe for rocco today.. they tested for all co's.. i went ahead and asked for 21 days of doxy too.. they gave him 50 mg twice a day.. just incase!!!

i honestly would keel over if he died.. i couldn't handle it...i'm sure i would make it.. but it would be a longer road for me, when its tough already

as for you baby i think it will be just fine you and your vet did great. as i said my man tested positive for lyme last yr and was placed on abx for 1 month. 3 months later his test showed good.

and i have said this b4 i wish my vet would treat me i just think he can do a better JOB then the Drs here.

OK, I HAD to post My Girls, too. I love the expressions on their face! Left is Mocha, who looks so serious, but NEVER is. Roo, on right who is always full of mischief.

When catastrophe or New World Order comes knocking, I will not leave home without them.

+lyme i wouldnt leave home with out my babies either. and yours are prettyyy. i have always been if my dog dont like ya then neither do i...lol they are so much smarter then people i think..lol

Yeah, I always end up w/ the dogs nobody else wanted, Roo being a disobedient furry black dog, and Mocha being pit mix. When I met her, it became my life's purpose to adopt her so I could be sure nothing bad ever happened to her. Around here, that's a concern. If you watch Dogtown, then you know what I mean. (but sorry, don't watch any TV anymore)

Funny how when I was in the process of the adoption, I whined to myself that I never end up w/ the 'cute' dogs. I didn't adopt her for her looks, I thought she was a plain, drab, brown dog. But NOW EVERBODY who meets her compliments on how beautiful she is. Her coat is a sheen and her muscles bulge. Her eyes will melt you, too.

My dogs love everybody! They both scramble for attention, me me me!! I would hope they would turn on someone attacking me, but I'm afraid that if someone broke in here, they would think it was to pet them! Excellent watchdogs, tho, w/ very fierce barks.

Told you not to get me started on dogs.....

I'm the same way. when i was a child i would bring home every stray i found. large or small. ugly or cute. it didnt matter to me. all i knew was they needed love and when giveing this love they bloomed. and i have learned in life thats all anyone needs. love can and is a wonder drug.

+lyme. when you take a dog into you home and love it. they inturn take you into there pack. and if someone try to harm a member of the pak they will protect. its just how things work. i have seen and read stories of lil dogs and even birds who have done this.

when i found my blue he was 10 wks old 20lbs about the size of a poodle. he had tar on his face. and sad as it is to say. if i had not took him his life would of been short. then man who owned him whent to jail for drugs.(know what he wanted to do with him) and the guy i got him from had fighing pits. he was going to use blue as a bait dog.

blue loves people and will almost push you over for attion.lol and at 132lbs its not hard for him to do. 1 of his fav toys is a 16lb bowling ball. but at 3 months old when i was on the payphone. he would sit with his butt to the wall and grawl at anyone how came close. and this was only at night he did this.

he would look up at me as if to say i did a good job. hehe. i can say this tho. if not for blue i would not be here today. i feel this in my heart of hearts. when i got divorced there were times i was so depressed that he kept me going.cause i knew if anything happened to me . he would be doomed. and there time i didnt even know if we would have a roof over our heads.( i think a lot of it was due to lyme. i didnt know i had then)

i have waited over 10 yrs now to get a puppy out of him, i was scared cause of his age and haven lyme if he would be able to breed. so i found a vet who did the artificial breeding. this way it is less likey for the lyme to pass to my female or the puppies.( witch are due in about 2 weeks). they vet was a lil conserned about blue's lyme. but thought that this was the safest way to breed. i will have them tested as soon as i can. in my dealing with the vets and Drs here i know behond a doubt vets are more up to date on lyme then Drs are.
