Has anyone ever heard of taking 1000mg of an Antibiotic all in one dose, twice a day?

I want to say I've been prescribed Amoxicillin in that dosage...(2) 500mg pills 2x/day

I could be wrong...it might have only been 1000mg total. I can't remember!

I don't want to question my doctor but that just seems like alot in one dose. He wanted me to work my way up to 2000mg a day. I've been spacing it out in 500mg doses. I know I should listen to him but I know my body too. I herxed on 1500mg of Amoxicillian, spacing them out in 500mg doses.

Once I was on 4 pills of Bactrim Double Strength/day...I thought I would DIE.

CG, maybe you should call to make sure the dose is right. always when in doubt call, its better to be safe then sorry later.

CajunGrl, 1000 mg of one medication is not the same as 1000 mg of another.  What antibiotic is it?  Lyme disease is typically treated with high-dose antibiotics, often more than one at the same time.

For instance I believe the recommended minimum dose of Amoxicillin for Lyme is 3000 mg daily, but the recommended dose of Doxycycline is 300-600 mg daily with 400 mg daily often prescribed.  So it depends on the antibiotic.

Ticker and CG,

My LLMD had not settled on how he was going to treat me till all my labs were in (tested me for lots of stuff). Meantime, I got the new tick bite and he called me in a Doxy script.

Pills are 100 mg. Directions say 1 twice daily for 4 weeks. But I have 120 pills, which would equal 2 months.

So I don't know if his intention was to give me 2 months worth, or if the directions are not correct. Because I'm not seeing many doses of 200 mg Doxy per day.

I have one huge problem w/ this Doc. He is impossible to reach. Previous phone calls and emails have not been returned. So I may go on and figure this out for myself. Do you think I should increase the doxy myself? I'm not on any other abx.

Also, I really do not like the doxy, sometimes the heartburn is unbearable, since I can't take a rolaid after it! I also love my dairy, so not as big a problem w/ doxy twice as it would be doxy 3 times per day or more. I'd really rather Amox, because I have had to take 2000 mgs at once for dental procedures, w/ no side affects.

What is your opinion of doxy vs amox? (personally, I want to try LDN, but Dr doesn't know anything about it yet)

And CG, I like the sounds of your amox dose. For some reason, I strongly believe you are gonna kick it w/ that. If not LDN, that's what I wish I was on.

And CG, you want to herx, don't you?

+Lyme, Doxy is often the first med given because it can be effective for Lyme and some of the co-infections.  In my opinion, it is a better choice for a new bite.  From what I understand, 200 mg is not strong enough though.  I believe the recommended dose is 300-600 mg daily with 400 mg daily often prescribed.  I would call the office and ask how it is supposed to be prescribed.

Are you seeing a Lyme doctor?  What are his initials?  If you don't want to say, that is okay or feel free to email if you would prefer.

Do you eat something substantial before taking the Doxy and not lay down for at least an hour after taking it?  This should help with the heartburn.   People who take 400 mg daily take 200 mg twice daily. 

LDN does not treat the bacteria.  It helps the immune system.

I am on Amoxicillian. He wanted me to start with 500mg 2x's a day, then after a week, 1000mg 2x's a day. Is 1000mg in one dose right? I've never taken this high of a dose in one sitting before. It's usually spread out throughout the day.

Lyme,

I am already herxing. That's the problem. I'm only on 1500mg a day right now. I've been having really bad neurological symptoms. That's why I'm concerned. My doctor already thinks I'm overloaded with toxins. I will just give him a call tomorrow and see what he thinks.

Gosh, I'm sorry, CG. Yeah, I agree, you better call the Doc tomorrow. Maybe that dosage is correct, but maybe you'll have to taper down and then work up again if your herxes are really bad. I hope your Dr knows you best! Please let us know what he says, OK?

Ticker, yeah my Dr is an LLMD, but it's a side practice for him, he mainly works the ER in a little town in KS. His initials are JD. He is on the Board of the Lyme Association of Greater Kansas City and he formerly worked w/ Dr. R in Kansas City.

Since the first bad heartburn attack w/ my very first dose, most of the other doses have been OK. I drink a lot of water w/ it and eat something first, too. I'm just used to a little milk and a little more dairy when taking meds. I wonder if perhaps the 200 mg/day dose is cautionary, but I'll have more pills on supply if the bite happens to make me sick?

I think I know about all the LLMDs in my area, but I would like to know if you have any more on your list? I really need to find one covered by my ins (and am on one's waiting list). I will email you, OK?

CajunGrl, please hang in there. If you are feeling this bad, maybe you should skip your doses the rest of today and in the morning until you can talk to him? Again, please let us know. Unfortunately, you are going to be our amox expert.....

Killer, I just meant a very brief reprieve until speaking w/ her Dr tomorrow. Many sources have said that if the herx is bad, then one can stop and start back more slowly, so the herxes won't be so intense. And CG is already herxing on a lower dose than the target dose. I don't think it would halt or slow any improvement to miss a couple of doses at this point, esp while waiting to contac the Dr.

Hi CajunGrl,

I too am on Amoxicillin 500mg. 2 capsules/ twice daily. So the dose I am sure is correct. I was on 1,000 mg. daily for 3 days then upped to 2,000mg./daily. I have had some herxing symptoms. Mainly increase in muscle and joint pain. I have just been drinking fluids like crazy and trying to exercise. (Which feels impossible at times, LOL.) I hope you are feeling better.

Thanks so much. I'm still not sure I can take it all at once because I've been herxing real bad. I had a bad episode last night. Ugh! I just want to be done with all of this.

I have read most of it. I am newly diagnosed, so I am researching everything like crazy. I actually saw my LLMD today. We are continuing on the Amoxicillin 1,000mg. twice a day until I see him in 3 weeks. I think he is then going to switch things up. I am sorry you are having a rough time of it. I noticed a shift in my pain and stiffness when I increased the dose. I also started taking Samento and Cumanda. (2 drops of each a day.) My symptoms truly increased. My scalp was tingling and my eyelid was even twitching. I told my LLMD what I had started. He told me that was fine, but not to take more than the 2 drops/daily for now. He said at some point we can increase the Samento, however he does not want my immune system "over-stimulated" at this point.

I hope you are feeling better soon.

After getting out of the hospital filled my script for Doxycycline 100mg twice a day when finished I went to my PCP for a script for Doxycycline, asked for 200mg twice a day he said no 100mg twice a day was enough. I was still having extreme fatigue and tremors, nothing else though and after finding HW I knew I was one of the lucky ones.

I learned so much here and most important I learned that I should be on 400mg a day so I doubled my dose....absolute truth, two days later both the fatigue and tremors are gone and now a week later they have not returned. I am symptom free and well on my way to a cure.

I take my 200mg of Doxy with Pepcid so no heartburn, which I did have without the Pepcid.

The only thing I'm not sure of is how long to take Doxycycline, been on it since June 15th. Would appreciate it if anyone would share their experience.

I was lucky to be in first stage Lyme and only because when admitted to the hospital I asked to be tested for it, something they were not going to do, but agreed and it was Lyme that was causing my high fever, fatigue and tremors. Had four days of IV doxycycline and was released. Had a small bout of herx when I got home and I didn't understand why I was getting sicker until I came here and found out what it was and was a good sign.

Congratulations on beating it. I'm very happy for you and hope you never have a reason to come back for advice on LD again.

This forum is a godsend. Many members are just as capable of treating LD as some of the llmd's and many others are more capable of providing support and better advice than any psychologist ever could. There's quite a bit of talent, knowledge and compassion floating around on here and I'm glad I stumbled across it in my search for answers.

I second your description you are right on in every way.
HW is the best and most user friendly site I have ever seen.

I have an enlarged thyroid so will hang around there and learn something. Had an ultra sound two weeks ago and not even a phone call from the doctor. Who needs him anyway I'll get better answers at HW :-)
