I have recently been diagnosed with bursitis in my left shoulder. I have chronic pain in it and loss of some mobility (especially lifting and overhead type activities). I just wondered if this could be Lyme related and if any others developed this?

P.S. Also doc wanted to give me cortisone shots for the pain (I said no - husband tried to encourage me to try them but I stood firm) would shots in the joint of steriods be as bad as the orals or IVs? I know one of my worst flares of Lyme was after IV steriods in the hospital when they thought I had MS. Husband keeps saying I am doing "better" should be okay I should try it, but I know that I still have symptoms and that Lyme is alive - I don't want to risk it. I would rather have pain in my shoulder than kick up the Lyme. I know you all understand. I guess it also depends on how bad the shoulder gets.... I will try the motrin, physical therapy and other stuff first and then pray about it all.

Lyme will go to a weak part in the body. Before I was treated my shoulder pain was horrendous. Of the 32 doctors I went to for various symptoms aan orthopedic told me it was arthritis or bursitis. It would come and go. After I got treatment for Lyme and co-infections the pain went away.

At one time before I knew I had lyme I had injections in my discs (lumbar spine). I continued to get worse. It was only later that I found out about lyme and steroids. ....If you have LYme I would not recommend getting the shots. As you know Lyme already depresses the immune system, and steriods will suppress it even more allowing the lyme to multiply and have a part within you.

If your husband understood this he would not encourage it.

OOOof....I wish I would have seen this earlier. I, too, have had lots of pain with my L shoulder and just went to Ortho today (2 hrs ago actually). Of course...the xray was unremarkable and he injected me with cortisone and asked me to return in 4 weeks. I was very upfront about being positive for Lymes and asked if there was a connection. He asked if there was pain prior to my diagnosis and the answer is yes, but I think I've had Lymes longer than when it finally showed positive on paper. I have decreased range of motion, strength and a pain that feels like it goes right to the bone. I have it much worse in the L compared to the R....buth they're both sore all the time.

Is this bad????

When I first went in my orthopedic doc wanted to inject me with cortisone right away too, but I said that due to my Lyme I am unable to take steriods (my husband sat there rolling his eyes - believe it or not he too has Lyme as does two of our children but he still thinks I over react about the steriods - not to mention other things). I told him that he would have to offer me alternatives. He ordered an MRI (another story due to my EXTREME anxiety and claustrophobia but I made it somehow) to rule out the cuff being torn. Said showed scar tissue and that it was very inflamed which indicated bursitis, so today he gave me an injection of "numbing" meds - by the way not working and making it worse, put me on large doses of motrin (not sure how my colitis will respond to this we shall see) and ordered physical therapy. He said he would really like to do the cortisone shots, but doesn't want to make me sick or anything.

I currently am doing NOTHING for the Lyme itself as my ID doc has told me currently the "cure" was worse for my body then the disease - I have had too many side effects and so I don't know if now the disease is "taking over" or what. There really isn't anybody around for a second opinion and I have done the "out of pocket" and "out of state" thing once before and it was hell on the family in so many ways that I really only want to do that as a last resort especially since I don't drive (do to SEVERE anxiety issues). That is another reason I don't want to take risk the cortisone shots and get sick - I don't know if I have someone to treat me right now. Oh this is such a terrible disease! Lord help us all!

A Cortizone shot for my tennis elbow was what triggered my LD to rear it's ugly head.  If I had to do it all over again I wouldn't do it.  It did lead me to finally get tested for LD (pos. WB) so I guess it was a blessing in disguise!  The shot helped very little, the doctor also put me on Rx strength Naproxen (basically a double dose around the clock) which masked the symptoms for 10 days and then all hell broke loose.  The ONLY thing that helped my Tendinitis was when I went on a low dose of Doxy, my Tendinitis was greatly reduced and I was able to use my arm again.  I truly believe that the shot got the LD going in high gear.

I had pain in my arm so bad I could not use it for a month prior to being diagnosed with lyme. It went away and I had no more trouble with it until I took Levaquin. Then I got tendonitis which is still with me. You can get ultrasound to help. It increases the circulation to the affected area. You should stay away from steriods as suppressing the immune system will just allow the lyme to take over.

Leah, you can take herbs. Anxiety is often related to bartonella which I hope you do not have but you should check out all the symptoms. There are a lot of herbs you can try for lyme such as cat's claw, resveratrol, grapefruit seed extract, garlic, andrographis. . . You can take clove bud oil, cumanda and houtynia for bartonella if you think you have it.

Hmmm... grateful for the history of these threads... when my spouse wondered if the debilitating shoulder pain is bursitis I looked up a correlation between this and lyme. Now I know to not accept steroids if that comes down the pike. Hmmm... really interesting... back to the buhner books to see what I can find and what I need to add.

I have bursitis in my ankle, it is awful. I felt some relief when taking turmeric, you should try it. I took very high doses, because when I took those that are written on the bottle, I had no effects at all. It is safe to take more, because it is a condiment.
Don't take cortizone. I took it and it wreak havoc on my body.

I got bit, had a mark and thought it was a spider bite. Then my knees started hurting. I have bad knees and have always gotten cortisone shots for relief. I went and got cortisone shots in both knees and lyme exploded in my body. Neck pain, head pain, weird sore throat, gravel sounds in my neck, fatigue and etc.

Absolutely no steroids for me unless I have something life threatening.
