6 yr old son got bitten yesterday and has a bulls-eye rash today

Hello,

I am new to this forum. My 6 yr old son was playing the back-yard and came back complaining about a bug that bit him. I looked and there was a small circular bug-bite behind his neck in his upper back. There was also a little blood there. I checked him again today and it has become a bulls-eye rash as there is swelling around the bite. My son is otherwise not displaying any symptoms - the 'bug' bit him yesterday at around 4pm. But today is Memorial day and the after-hour doctor's office said that I should bring him in tomorrow as there is no urgency at this point. Unfortunately, I could see no tick or bug around him or in his clothes that I could keep with me for testing.

I am looking for some advise - is this time sensitve and should I take my son to the hospital immediately or should I wait till tomorrow? Thanks,

I would observe it closely.  If there is no further increase in swelling or redness, wait until tomorrow.  Otherwise, take him to the ER tonight.  You don't know for certain what bit him.  It could have been a spider, too.

JaneA I am so sorry that happen to your boy. My advice to you is to get him to a doctor ASAP that will put him on antibiotics right away. The sooner he gets treated the better chance he has of having no problems. I don't want to scare you, I am giving you the same advice I would give to my children. Please find a docotr who will properly treat this. Good luck and please keep us posted. God Bless..

He should see the pediatritian tomorrow and start antibiotic treatment for lyme immediately. It is good that you are aware of the bite and rash, most people don't have any issues when treated right away. Please let us know how you make out.

Thanks so much for your prompt reply. I have a doctor's appointment for tomorrow morning - I hope to get him started on antibiotics tomorrow.

I will write back tomorrow.

It's good you are being proactive. Hopefully it was not a tick bite, but it's better to be safe than sorry. Prompt abx treatment will save your son years of suffering and pain. Take it from those of us who have lived with this evil disease for many years.

Once concern I have, most PCP's have very little knowledge of Lyme disease. Some have none. Many times they will minimize the seriousness of this and not want to treat it. Don't allow that to happen. Your best bet is to take your son to a Lyme Literate Medical Doctor (LLMD). Hopefully your pediatrician will take this seriously and treat your son accordingly. If not, an LLMD is a must.

Jane, so sorry this has happened to your little fellow. He is blessed to have a mom who is on the ball.

Others have already shared what I would say.

One other thing, take several pictures of the rash...for future reference and proof (if needed).

Praying for prompt treatment, quick healing, and no ramifications in the future for your son.

I agree. Take several pictures of the rash. Place a coin next to it to give it size definition. Also, most PCP's won't treat with antibiotics for more than two weeks. He will probably need at least a months worth or longer.

Don't mess with it and demand antibiotics. I am not an advocate for just handing out antibiotics but you do not want to take any chances with lyme dz.
You don't want to wonder years later if it was lyme like me. I have all these problems and am worried a tick bite 15 years ago caused this. Good luck to you.

I went twice to 2 different doctors and they said this is not a tick bite. As of now, I have decided to wait for the next 3 weeks and then go back if there are any symptoms. I was wondering if there is any blood work that might be able to test for the disease.
