Hi guys I only get on here when something is real wrong, good friend? Not,  Hope that u all have been getting better but as I quickly previewed topic threads looks a little bad.

Have any of you had a neuro-psych test with a psychiatrist?  If so do you think they are accurate?   I am almost amnesic I had one years ago by a dr my lyme dr sent me too. I bombed it.  Is this test reliable or is it set upso nobody could pass it?  thanks lisa

My personal opinion on psych tests is that they're all rigged, written so that it is nearly impossible to "pass" but that's just my opinion after having been given multiple MMPI's and others. The whole thing about psychiatry is based on some theories from a few philosophers... Do psychiatrists/psychologists help people? Sometimes. But I get so sick and tired of these counselors and such insisting on taking a person back to their childhood for a new issue that has nothing to do with a person's past. Ok, off my soapbox... And yes, I did take a college level psychology course, taught by a fantastic teacher.

this is what I wondered,if it was rigged so nobody could pass,it,well u don't say. Thanks again Razzle (did u pass?) I did not get any right unless it was by accident.

Scuse me -- I'm a Lymie --- where is this test?

Like Razzle, I took one 101 psych class in college. ANd I have had little to no help from psychologists.

My last 2 visits were with a psychologist (therapist, not psychiatrist) When I unloaded most of my current stuff on her, she started to 'teach' me to go to my 'Happy Place' when feeling stressed or depressed.

HELLO.... I had just TOLD her I HAD NO 'Happy Places'. The reason I was there! THERE IS NO HAPPY PLACE AND THAT IS WHY I AM HERE!!

Next (2nd) visit -- mind you -- NO tests given. She brought up the possibility of changing my antidepressant since it did not seem to be working (this was in the throes of Lyme, unbeknownst to me).

IN turn, I told her I was most interested in what was wrong w/ me, so I could correct it and get OFF of meds.

She told me (again, 2nd visit), emphatically, 'You will never be able to get off meds. You will always have to take meds.'

How DARE a therapist offer me this diagnosis on my 2nd freaking visit??

Hi.I am sorry psycholoists are searching to find the answers too but happy place ? That's a first. The test I took had nothing to do with me or my life it was a memory/intelligence test . He (the shrink) asked me to do certain things and then he would ask me to remember, I was to, to find patterns, and he would say a sentence tell me to remember it then couple of minutes or so he asked me what it was. I do not think Icould ask questions or talk during test but can't remember ,not sure on that part. But anyway I bombed it. He wrote up a very bad diagnosis and prognosis the only positive thing he had to say was I showed more emotional control than most "lymies.". I wonder if everybody flunks, my daughter has abnormal psyc right now I will ask her to ask. I wanted to kill him oh we wont go there Anyway Razzle did u have these kind of tests ?

I know quite a few people that had neuropsych tests. It is possible to do well on the tests, some of my friends have passed. I wouldn't say that most people pass but since the tests are expensive, they are usually only given when docs believe the person has a problem. It's used to diagnose brain dysfunction so if your brain is working like it is supposed to, you'll do well on the tests.

The only "brain function" test I had showed I had slower than usual info processing...but the test is biased because it was given orally. I don't do well orally, I do better when I can read/see the question. I read >900 words/minute in high school, with good comprehension, so I don't think I'm slow to process visual stuff, just oral/auditory stuff.

The other tests I've been given have been to look for depression & anxiety. The MMPI is outdated because it associates stomach ulcers with stress, which we now know are 98% caused by h. pylori bacteria. The MMPI also has other questions that make assumptions about activities that "everyone" participates in. I don't go to parties, for example, but that doesn't mean I'm not social or don't like to talk to friends. I just don't prefer large crowds because of the noise. Am I a nut job for this? No, but the test doesn't take this into consideration...it just assumes everyone goes to parties. I could go on and on... Suffice it to say the test is biased and very outdated, in my opinion.

Well, Razzle, then I am wondering if tests like this could help some of us get disability? Yeah, I can still work, but it's getting harder by the minute....

Both of you work? I did not have enough CURRENT work credits to get disability. There is another disability ssi but you have to be pretty dirt poor to get it and its like 5 or 600 a month

Yesterday I didn't move much will try to do more tomorrow. See? I meant more today, Hope you have good ones lisa

Yes, it is possible for tests to help you qualify for disability. Wish I did - I never had enough work credits to qualify for disability, and I haven't worked (except a 6-month contract in 2006 that I was so sick by the end of that I was glad when the contract was over) since 1999.
