Can't get past the back and neck pain.

I'm going on six months now of treatment with ABX.  All symptoms are gone except for a horrible upper back pain and a stiff neck that's only on right side and includes trapezius muscle.  

Stiff neck is ever present. It was one of my many early symptoms before I began ABX treatment and it made me suspect Lyme.  I have had this neck thing for 8 months now!  Goes away on the rare occasion.

Upper back pain started after being on Doxy for several weeks. Initially I thought it to be part of my first herx reactions. Probably was.... 

....and it went completely away for a while.  But now it comes and goes whenever it wants to.  

Sometimes pain will last all day and sometimes will last part of the day. Sometimes it switches from left side of back to right and vice versa.

Sometimes pain is only in one particular spot and the spot will roam around from hour to hour. Worse when sitting still. Lessens or goes away when lying flat. Does not hurt while sleeping.

Lots of muscle knots I can relieve temporarily by rolling around on a tennis ball-- I do this 20 times a day sometimes!

Very fibro-like but no tender points to the touch. 

Does anyone have this persistent stiff neck and upper back pain?  Has anyone had them go away for good? 

 I'm starting to think I will have these 2 symptoms forever (yikes!!!) 

They are very relentless and unpredictable and can totally ruin my good days that are VERY GOOD now because even brain fog and head pressure has lifted (finally) and my memory is getting better! 

Wonderful progress with ABX--- all except for this back and neck pain.  

Soooooo frustrating! Grrrrrr !  I'm back to crying about this....and I haven't cried in ages.   Pain is really bad! 

My LLMD just put me on a Mepron,  Azithromycin combo to get me over the hump. He thought I was levelling off on  the Amox.  Thus the switch.   Maybe it will work!? 

So also.....any thoughts on this new combo?

Good to hear that you are feeling so much better!!

Of course I know very little about abx, but I am having a time with the neck/upper back pain. It comes & goes & moves around just like you have described. I have had these symptoms for quite a while, with breaks from it from time to time.

I got a snicker about the tennis ball - I use them as well!! Well, whenever I can get them away from my little Jack Russell terrier anyway!!! smilewinkgrin

Yes the pain really sucks! What pain meds are you taking? One friend of my is on Fentanyl patches and are really helping her. Talk to your doctor. He/she shouldn't be ignoring your pain relief needs. And if your magnesium levels are low, which almost all lymies are, that adds to the pain issue. I take about 1500mg of Magnesium daily other wise I have major all over body spasms.

Please talk to your doctor and tell him you need pain relief!! It's part of your treatment.

Also, try to use a lot of detox methods. You may be having a lot of die off build up in your muscle tissue.

I'll check with my LLMD about stronger pain relief-- NSAIDS do nothing!

And I'll see if my mag levels are low. Good advice. Thank you!

Remarkably-- today is a pain free day-- so far! But it's only 7:30 in the AM, so anything is possible.

You should consider chiropractic for your aches and pains. I am a chiropractor and have had great success with these aches and pains. Also, studies have shown recently that regular chiropractic care boosts your immune system by helping your body make more white blood cells. I think manual manipulation works the best for the neck, but any chiropractic is better than what you are doing now. You do not want to go down the pain management road with these pain meds if at all possible....

I remember my neck being so tight for so long that when I went to the mall with my teenage son I actually stopped at the massage kiosk and had the man who only spoke chinese massage my neck and shoulder. It felt wonderful. I also went to the chiropractor for the first time when i couldn't move my neck any longer. It does get better. I had the right flank pain also. There were times when I couldn't turn over in bed it was so bad and would come home from work and get right on the heading pad. That is al but gone now too. It is just amazing what this disease can do. Do you take milk thistle? i swore mine was liver pain, although ever doctor says it wasn't but yet the pain is gone now that my liver enzymes are normal. Go figure? Stay positive and be persistent with the meds and supplement. It does pay off.

Yes, terrible neck pain (right side) that radiated down to my collarbone was one of my first Lyme symptoms. It's much better, but like yours, it comes and goes, although not nearly as severe. I have since had trouble with TMJ (also improving) and since last week my back is really bothering me. I have a massage every other week and it really helps. NSAID's do nothing for my pain and narcotics (Vicodin, etc.) make me feel really weird, so I don't take them. However, I feel SO MUCH better than 6 months ago!

Hi Cat, Im 8 months into tx and still suffer from stiff neck. Some of the meds help it but the minute I discontinue or change things or even miss a dose or two it comes back. Ive had a lot of luck with Omnicef. It has helped with the stiff neck and also mental symptoms. Hope this helps. :)
