Anyone on Marshall Protocol herx on benicar?

While I believe my husband has had lyme for over a year, it was upon going on benicar for high blood pressure that he crashed.  Severe depression and anxiety and panic attacks.  Apparently, on the Marshall Protocol you are given benicar with antibiotics.  The way I read it, if you have a reaction to benicar prior to antibiotics, then you are suffering from an inflammatory disease.  Anyone know anything about this?  Very bizarre indeed.

I didn't have any herx on Benicar alone, it wasn't until the minocycline was added that I got any reaction. Dr. Marshall thinks that the Benicar is much more important than the abx, so it's possible the Benicar had the effect. You can ask him/his minions on the website once you register. It's probably marshallprotocol.com, but I've been off the protocol for about 6 months so I can't recall.

Thanks a bunch. Can't wait to ask my LLMD when I see her in July. Wonder why Benicar is not part of lyme treatment protocol if it can cause that kind of reaction. How did you do on MP?

Hmmm... The only thing I can say is that the MP is extremely hard on your kidneys, and most docs consider it far more dangerous than even long-term abx. I am NOT saying that it is, but it is considered even more far-out than ILADS guidelines.

Again, I have to stress that the MP is not Benicar, it is Benicar at amounts 4-8x its original intent, which is why I have been non-committal about whether it is the reason your hubby had a herx.

I ended up in the hospital twice with kidney failure, but from what I am told, that is a pretty rare case. But clearly I had to stop. For me the other side effects were almost intolerable as well. There was a support group nearby that had some members feel that the MP saved their life and swore by it. So I can't say whether it is a good choice or not. But I would probably say that about any treatment.

I've got brutal side effects on the abx as well, so maybe I'm just difficult!

Wow. Yeah would seem unlikely that it would be Benicar but when I tell you he started feeling sick 2 weeks into the benicar and hit the wall hard at 4 weeks. Coincidence? IDK.

Either way, I'm so glad that finally you have confirmation so that he and you can get on the road to recovery.
