New strain of Ehrlichia found!

I know this doesn't really sound like good news, but it is! the more strains that are identified, the more accurate the tests will be!!!

Here is the summary:
We report a new ehrlichia species in Minnesota and Wisconsin and provide supportive clinical, epidemiologic, culture, DNA-sequence, and vector data. Physicians need to be aware of this newly discovered close relative of E. muris to ensure appropriate testing, treatment, and regional surveillance. (Funded by the National Institutes of Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.)

They are still talking about tick-borne infections - Ehrlichia is one of the infections known as a "co-infection". The standard treatment for Ehrlichia would still hold true for this strain as well. According to Dr. Joseph Burrascano's notes ( available in our "New to Lyme?" thread) the dosage and length of treatment are as follows (page 25):

Treatment
Standard treatment consists of Doxycycline, 200 mg daily for two to four weeks. Higher doses, parenteral therapy (IV therapy), and longer treatment durations may be needed based on the duration and the severity of the illness, and whether immune defects or extreme age is present (sorry his words, not mine!). However, there are reports of treatment failure even when higher doses and long duration treatment with doxycycline is given. In such cases, consideration may be given for adding rifampin, 600 mg daily, to the regimen.

Obviously, a person who suspects that they may have this infection should be evaluated by a Lyme literate doc.

if you were tested by a good tick borne specialist you would have had this tested also. it came out on mine.
my testing was 26 tubes divided out between quest lab , lab corp and igenex,

also later 5 tubes for an isac panel
and the stooltest to metemetrix

this proves and dis proves what could be but isn't or is really positive and enables the right doctor who knows how to really put labs together the whole picture.


If there were met of these doctors and not so many other doctors that are just throwing darts at the wall there would be so much less confusion and suffering.

They have actually found a new strain of Ehrlichia is what this post is about. Previously there were only two known and named strains of Ehrlichia.

Nope. No word on any new treatments for it. I'll keep my eye open for any article on that though!
