I will be seeing my LLMD again tomorrow and we will add either another antibiotic or some herbals. He is fine with whichever I decide upon. That's the problem....I'm still not sure which road to take. I'm taking 100mg of Doxycycline twice a day and just recently went through a terrible herx.
Suggestions anyone????

Hi lupusorlyme,
Well, at least you know you are on the right track being treated for Lyme!
Inasmuch as you had such a strong herx reaction to 200mgs of Doxy (a relatively low dose of that med), whichever treatment course you choose, you will want to take it slow and detox a lot!
Many LLMD's are using a combination of abx and herbals; you don't have to choose one or the other but make use of both to devise a treatment program that gets you well again.
Keep us posted on what you choose to do!

I agree with everything Achievinggrace said... Many of us are on combination protocols, myself included.
I'm using Flagyl (cyst-busting antibiotic/antiparasitic) and Andrographis (an anti-Lyme herb from Buhner's protocol), and may add or switch to a different herb eventually.
The most important thing to remember is not everyone gets the same results from the same treatments, so you really do need to go through some trial and error to find what works best for your specific version of Lyme/coinfections.
Happy Holidays,

Sometimes we need to listen to our bodies... I know that was the case with me...
Sorry that doesn't help much...

I agree and am on both, antibiotics and herbal. My goal is to get to the point of just herbals after the antibiotics do as much as they can. Perhaps add some of both to really pound those spirochetes.

Thanks everyone for the timely responses!!! I think I'm going to use a combination of both and at some point hopefully be able to just use herbals and supplements. Since I was infected 38 years ago...I think I'm gonna need some cyst busters!
God Bless and Happy Holidays!!!

This is the continuing debate and the answer is - there is no concrete answer! LOL! From my experience on this board, it seems that the majority of folks are doing a combination of abx and another herbal/naturopathic treatment. Most, if not all, LLMDs want you to do abx's of some sort - some want I/Vs, some do orals only, some do high dose, some do more moderate dosages. The current "Burrascano" handbook, which most LLMDs follow, and is accepted by ILADS, believe that you MUST take abxs to be cured. That stated, the proof is in the proverbial pudding as it were. Some here on this site have gotten better via herbal/natural methods. It's a very personal disease with a very personal solution IMO and it's up to us to figure out which works the best for us. And, unfortunately, sometimes the only way to figure out which path to go is via trial and error.
My own approach is to use the abx's and supplement with herbals in a hybrid approach. Springsjean said it well above, esp. that the herbals might aid synergistically to help the abx's). My LLMD is suggesting abx's and is also working with me on the herbals. But, you must remember that this only takes care of the one facet of a cure - the killing of the pathogens. You need a well-oiled detox program going as well (epsom salt baths, FIR sauna, coffee enemas, EXERCISE - whatever floats your boat and WORKS for you). PLUS, you have to address the emotional and spiritual components of the illness (acupuncture, meditation, therapy if necessary).

I agree with everything said above, and especially what yazzer said about
addressing other areas of your life - not just the treatments you are ingesting, but also your psychological, spiritual, and the rest of your physical self. Meditation, exercise, a healthy diet, are all important. Therapy if you are having severe depression, anxiety, or other psychological problems. You shouldn't just hope to kill the bacteria and expect everything else to fall into place. It's a lot of work, but well worth it!
I will be on 3 abx and 2 supplements in about
a month's time. I've been starting each one-by-one to make sure my body can adjust, so you don't have to choose one or the other unless you are having terrible effects from one. Just take it one at a time if your body is sensitive to medication, and that way if you have any bad reactions you have a better idea of which one it is.

I may be mistaken but it seems to meet that off you are killing off bugs, you will likely herx no matter what you are using. Personally I began w abx and added herbals over time.

Thanks folks...great advice from everyone!!! My LLMD spent a lot of time with me today. He added 2 more antibiotics( Flagyl, Omnicef) to the mix, along with some more supplements and herbals. But before I begin this new protocol I'm going to clean house!!! I will work on diet, exercise(if that's possible right now),and rebuilding my adrenals...otherwise I'm not sure I could handle the increased antibiotics.
It is so true that we do have more issues than just the infections and it is a lot of work....something the doc and I discussed today.
I do plan to start slow, observe, and back off if needed. I am sensitive to meds and I'm a little more than frightened by the prospect of more drugs! I forgot to ask the doc today if a herx can kill you....cause I felt like I was close to death last time!!!! He did recommend Parsley and Burbur for a herx... I'll have to look that up.
I appreciate the support from everyone here, and wishing you all well!!!
Happy Holidays!!!
