Hello,
My holistic doctor called me today to tell me I have lyme disease. She gave me some web links so I could find more information on it and be more informed about it for when we meet next week. She has told me she can't prescribe antibiotics and that we will talk about what steps to take next. I initially went to see her because I was diagnosed with anemia back in June of 2011, so many of the symptoms I had I blamed to it. Fatigue, tired all the time, dizzines, hip pain, and many more. I do have anemia also but I wonder if it is a consequence of Lyme.
I would like to ask you to refer any lyme specialist in the DC metro area preferably in Montgomery County. I have read scary stories of people getting very ill after antibiotic treatment so I rather be in the hands of someone that knows. I imagine I contracted this back in summer 2011 when I went camping to Cape Henlopen, a place I have research now that is known for ticks. oh well, I am a little scare, I have a toddler daughter who I adore and for the past 6 months I have been struggling to keep up with her energy.
She needs me, I have to be here.
Any support will be appreciated.

Hi there Ele - welcome to the forum! So sorry you have to be here, but I'm glad you've found some answers!

If you haven't already, you may want to check out the "New to Lyme?....Start Here!" thread - it has a lot of really useful information about Lyme disease (it helps to really know what you're dealing with and what to expect!), and you'll also find information about detoxing, such as through dry skin brushing, detox baths, etc., which will help a lot during any worsening you might experience during your treatment (known as a herheimer reaction - also described in detail in the New to Lyme thread).

For information on finding a Lyme Literate Medical Doctor(LLMD) in your area, please email our long time member, Dan's Mother at:

You will want to find an ILADS (International Lyme And Associated Diseases Society) doctor. The ILADS site is a great place to read to get you started on your Lyme journey.

From yesterday to today I think I know more about Lyme and I am terribly scared. No regular doctor wants to treat it, if they don't, it goes for ever and if they do it costs a lot of money and it might go for ever too. Is there hope?

YES! There is a lot of hope!! You can be treated by a Holistic Doc or a regular MD who specializes in Lyme that are called LLMD's (Lyme Literate Medical Doctors).

Please don't let this scare you into anything but action!! Your Holistic doc was right - start with learning and then don't stop learning about these infections! We have a great place to start your learning as well - the "New to Lyme?...Start Here!" thread has a ton of info and symptom lists, as well as tips to start detoxing, and all kinds of other information.

Treatment failure after abx use is a very real concern, and a really good reason to use a Lyme specialist if you chose to use abx. A good LLMD won't stop treatment just because you've been in treatment "long enough". They will wait until you are symptom free for at least 2 months -that being your best chance at pushing these infections into remission.

As I said earlier, though you can chose to use Holistic medicine to heal also. You can see by my signature line at the bottom of my posts, I'm using Chinese Medicine/acupuncture/Western herbs to heal and am having great improvements with this! We have several members currently using Holistic medicine to treat their tick-borne infections.

The most important thing is now you are not alone in this!! As LoveHealth said (thanks LoveHealth!!!)- we understand - because we have walked down that road you are now starting!! We are here to help clarify things, to give you tips and hints for things that can help, to give you a shoulder to lean on or an ear to cry into!! We are more of a family here than most support sites for Lyme, I believe that we are anyway!!! LOL!
