I've had recurrent ear problems for years now. It can be hard to tell whether it is a fungal or bacterial infection in the ear. I've had a lot of problems with fungal infections, though I've had some bacterial ones as well.
Taking antibiotics when it is fungal can actually make the situation worse. There is a delicate balance of fungus and bacteria in the ear canal, and I think I screwed mine up by taking so many antibiotics over the years. Now I have a lot of fungal problems. The one thing I discovered helps me is to cut a piece of a garlic clove and put that in my ear. It may take a few hrs but gets rid of the pain.
I also have some RX drops that can help. But beware that many general prac drs aren't aware of a fungal ear infection, much less how to distinguish between the 2.
