Nausea: Is it from ABs or from Lyme?

Has this type of nausea happened to you?
I have Lyme (just bitten 6/18/12) and supposedly Bart. Have been on antibiotics as follows:

200 mg Doxy BID for 2 months, then we added
Rifampin 300 mg BID for the past 5 weeks.

I had nausea when taking them on an empty stomach and now take at the end of a meal. It has been okay for a month or so, until this week.

Five days ago, I started to have significant nausea. The first day I didn't eat much, but found that I am nauseous whether I eat or not, so I am back to eating. The first 36 hours of the nausea I also had a bad headache -- unusual for me. I find that I am nauseous even 12 hours after taking my pills, and I would think they would be worn off by then.

It feels like motion sickness -- like being in the back seat of a car on a winding road, or being on a carnival ride.

My question is: is this from the meds? or is it from Lyme? or something else?

My LLMD has prescribed Paquenil in addition, but I have not started it yet. I want to figure out this nausea first. I am fearful that maybe the drugs have built up to a toxic level. I am a small person -- 115 pounds.

Any thoughts?

Are you detoxing quite a bit? That's the first thing you should do, IMO. If you are detoxing, then I would suggest stepping it up, as it does sound like you could be herxing. If, after a week of increased detoxing, there is still no change, then -if I was you - I would assume that they are new symptoms and would talk with my doc about it to see what could be done.

In the mean time, try ginger or peppermint for the nausea. The easiest way to do this is making a tea out of the herb, but you can take capsules as well. I use ginger caps and peppermint tea when it the nausea gets really bad for me - but I take 1500 mgs of ginger (in caps) three times a day to keep my nausea at bay.

Of course this is all based on the assumption that you don't have any signs of an allergic reaction or something.

I am not detoxing at all. The LLMD has not given me anything to do in that regard. I do drink a LOT and I am quite "regular" thanks to all the antibiotics and probiotics. And I eat a good diet.

I have not herxed yet, and not sure what it would feel like if I did herx.

Well, a herx is an increase of symptoms or new symptoms showing up during the course of treatment. As the bacteria die off, they release toxins and it's these toxins that drive your symptoms. Even before starting treatment, your symptoms are driven by the toxins, so detoxing - as outlined in the "New to Lyme?" thread, third post down I believe - helps the body rid itself of those toxins rather than allowing them to accumulate in the body causing more and more intense symptoms.
