 Does anyone have info about condoms protecting from lyme disease being a std?

Your input will be extremely appreciated.

Hi Tom -

I have the same question. That is going to be my birth control of choice - it seems the only safe option, given that my LLMd thinks sexual transmition is possible. I look forward to seeing other answers.

The problem is that there have not been any real studies done on this form of transmission. There are several documented cases of this happening, but there hasn't even been studies to confirm that it's more than just a random happening. Although I would caution everyone to protect those that you are having those types of relations with!

***I am not a doctor, nor am I medically qualified to give you advice on this matter**** But in my lowly opinion, condoms do stop bacteria though, so as long as it remains intact and you use a spermicide, then things [should be good.

This is supposed to be a family forum, so let's keep this discussion appropriate, please. Use technical names for things and no details, please. Those can be shared in personal emails if someone chooses to.

I have never seen any articles exploring that issue. However, I have read that Lyme spirochetes are capable of boring into cartilage and even bone. It would seem to me that a condom would present less of a barrier to penetration than either of those body tissues.

On the other hand, it would seem to me that If a condom is used and then quickly disposed of, that it would present a minimum opportunity for the spirochetes to penetrate the condom and to infect your partner.

Once again, I don't think that condoms should ever be thought of as 100% effective for anything.

In my experience, I have not found lyme to be transmitted through sex. My ex fiance and I tried having a baby for a year before I knew I had lyme and he never got it. Also, my ex husband never got it. Although I did give it to my daughter while I was pregnant with her.

In my opinion, from my experience, I don't think it it transmitted through sex, but I am certainly not an expert in this. Just sharing my opinion.

I know many couples where only 1 partner has lyme. My best friend also has it where she passed it to her son, but her husband doesn't have it. Her son is 5 and they were trying to have him for 4 years!
