My hair is falling out in handfuls when I shower and brush my hair. This has been going on for months but I thought it was a side effect of topomax but I have stopped taking that and it continues on. Is it the lyme or SE of antibiotics and treatment? I am taking omnicef, zithromax and mepron. It is gross and I don't like taking a shower anyway b/c it takes so much energy and then my hair is all over the place. I had really thick hair so I don't really look any difference but my hair is so much thinner in my hands. By far the least of my problems, just thought I would get some thoughts. I do take biotin.

I can relate. Though my hair has been falling out for quite some time and I always believed it was due to my pcos and thyroid issues. Still, I know how frustrating it can be...I have cried in the shower because so much hair has fallen out. I'm just glad that I DID have very thick hair to start with! It's much thinner now, but I still look the same, no bald spots yet.

I can't help you with any real insight though...just wanted to say that I totally understand what you're going through with the hair thing and all.

Biotin may help with this issue. May need more than the tiny dose found in a multivitamin...

I understand how tramatizing this can be. I went through a period like this too but I relate it to the horrible stress/anxiety I had because I was having so many health issues and no one would believe me and neuros kept just trying to give me antidepressants. This was before I was dx with lyme.

Anyhow, I started taking 5000 Biotin in the morning and again at night and I'm telling you, my hair is growing in super thick and I'm even getting baby hair on my temples where it had fallen out. I haven't had hair there in years!!!!

So, don't despair....

I don't believe it has anything to do with the antibiotics and everything to do with lyme.

I have had the exact same problem. I ended up cutting my long hair shorter so that it would not look so thin. This was before a lyme diagnosis and before any treatment. Also, I have never received antibiotic treatment. All of these factors lead me to say that it is unrelated to anitbiotics.

I believe that the hair loss is due to a hormonal imbalence. Lyme can cause that. Personally, I was diagnosed with a hormonal imbalance (before the lyme diagnosios) and treated for that imbalance. Very quickly, the hair loss became much more 'normal'.

Thanks all. I do feel it is hormonal in a sense as I always had it since I have had kids with increase postpartum but nothing like this. I am going to cut it a little shorter, it is pretty long now. I had a ton of hair before so I guess I am lucky and we will see what happens. If I start to get bald spots-maybe I will shave it and wear a head wrap. Then, this disease won't be so invisible. The things we have to accept with this disease never ends...

I think it will grow back. This was one of my earlier symptoms and i think it was this that convinced some family it wasnt all in my head before i got a dx. I had to get my hair cut real short because it got so thin ;( But the hair dresser said i had a lot of new growth and it seems to be getting thicker!
