Bartonella from a cat bite

Hi!  I was bitten by a sick cat 2.5 years ago and life has not been the same since then.  My story is the same as many - weird, debilitating symptoms with tons of tests and no answers.  I am very sick.  Although my docs are still somewhat in denial, my symptoms fit bartonella perfectly.  Does anyone know if treatment for bartonella from a cat bite differs from that of a tick?  Would an LLMD be the appropriate place for me to seek treatment?  There does not appear to be good treatment plan in any of the medical materials I have read.  My doc will only treat it with zithromycin.  Any advice?

Welcome to our community!

There are several different strains of Bartonella, and the treatment that you would get from a LLMD would work for any of those strains - including the ones that you can get from a cat.

I've used herbs only to heal, so I don't have any advice about the abx, but I'm sure someone will be along shortly that knows a lot more than I do about that! You can also read up on what one highly respected LLMD suggests for treatment by going to our "New to Lyme? Start here!" thread and downloading the pdf from Dr. Joseph Burrascano titled "Advance Topics in Lyme Disease".

Bart (whether from a tick or from a sick cat) does not normally persistent within an individual that has a healthy immune system. So either you have Bart and another undetected problem along with it or you probably just have another undetected problem.

Either way, I would still highly recommend a LLMD. In my opinion, they are not only experts at infectious disease, but also at managing the clinical symptoms of a patient and discerning what is really wrong with you. They also seem to be far more flexible about switching to alternate treatments and protocols when the conditions call for it.

In my case they are treating the Bart with Rifampin, but they are actually focusing on the Lyme, removing parasites, breaking biofilm and making my immune system stronger first.

I would also second the idea of seeing a llmd, and or alternative medicine doctor if you have suspicions of Bart. I treat with Rifampin as well. I have taken it long-term and I also had exposure to sick cats shortly before becoming ill.

However, I also have late-stage Lyme which severely compromised my immune system.

Thank you for your replies. I have a lead on a LLMD and a LLPA now, thank goodness. I have some unrelated health issues that may have contributed to the bart taking hold. I reread the thread and downloaded the pdf - missed that!

The antibiotic choices are confusing and I would appreciate some opinions. Is bart better treated with levofloxacin or rifampin? What are the advantages over azithromycin?

Also, considering it was 2.5 years ago that bart invaded, what is a reasonable length of time to be on antibiotics? My docs are not exactly helping in this area.

I'm also researching complimentary alternative treatments and have a lead on a good person to see.

There really is no way of knowing how long one will be in treatment, as there are many factors that can change periodically. Things like how well your body is detoxing at any given point, what other infections/viruses you may have, and more.
