I too have had the experience of memories returning that I had assumed were just gone - memories of my childhood, memories of my children growing up, even memories of my & my husband's wedding other parts of our lives. Every aspect of my memory was affected from what I mentioned to remembering names, how to do things, names and faces of people I had known all my life or had just met.
Now I still have lapses where I have no memories, especially those of my early childhood, but I was also quite ill for over 13 years and was on again and off again for most of my life - so I'm very grateful for what memories I have had come back!!!
Do all that you can to heal and to heal well! And then give yourself time. As many of us have found out, the body can function even though it's not at it's best health, so give the healing time to complete itself before you assume those memories won't be coming back.
Also, do things to strengthen your mind!! When I first started this activity, I had to start with "search a word" puzzles. I needed to retrain my brain to find patterns. Online games are great too - just find the ones that are simple or match your abilities and don't get discouraged!!!
Another really great 'tool' that I am currently using is Lumosity (
www.lumosity.com/). It allows you multiple levels and you start at whatever level your brain is currently functioning!
