Cat53...
The book is a good place to start, so one can get a general background on HBOT/mHBOT.
The FDA approves HBOT for only 13 or so "on label" conditions, such as "the bends", carbon monoxide poisoning, diabetic wounds, etc. Some insurances will pay for clinical HBOT for these conditions.
It is legal for doctors to use HBOT for "off label" conditions, as thet FDA doesn't regulate how doctors prescribe a treatment, only the treatment/equipment/drug itself. There are many, many off-label conditions which HBOT treats, including neurological diseases, like Lyme, MS, Parkinsons, stroke, etc., and there are promising results with ALS. Insurance generally doesn't pay for HBOT for these conditions.
There is a big difference between HBOT and mHBOT (mild hyperbaric) in terms of the protocol, including the degree of pressure used. Some conditions require higher pressures, such as "the bends". Research is showing that the lower pressures (1.5 ATA and under...i.e., mHBOT) are more effective for neurological conditions. They also carry less risk.
mHBOT can be done in a hard chamber in a clinical setting, but it is expensive, and many conditions require extended treatments. I bought my own mHBOT home chamber, which reaches a maximum of 1.3 ATA, and used it along with supplemental oxygen via oxygen concentrator 1 hour daily, and continue to use it daily. I have my life back completely now, med-free, from 7 years of severe neurological Lyme and co-infections. In my opinion, to have success, one must be very consistent and committed to the treatment...but it works.
There is a lot of controversy surrounding HBOT vs. mHBOT...but you have to consider that clinics have a lot to lose if people become aware that they can treat certain conditions themselves from home for a fraction of the cost. It is still expensive to purchase a chamber, but makes sense if it is to be used long term, as in Lyme disease. I have started forming a network that helps people find alternative ways to access chambers financially, and through cooperative use.
There is also controversy about
what pressure is necessary to "kill" Lyme disease, and the studies on this are not clear. However, it worked for me, and it is my opinion that it is not JUST about
killing bugs, but about
putting the immune system back in charge so it can fight these infections as it was meant to do. It is also very much about
giving the body what it needs to repair and restore, and bring itself back into balance...
