Do You Know What You're Eating?

I'm sure many on here are aware of the problems occurring from eating mass produced meats from animals being fed an unnatural diet for their needs, but for those who aren't, this will explain it. It's cruel for the animals too.

Yea....I've converted to what I call 'happy meat.' Which is free range, no antibiotics etc. etc. It is a lot more work to go to the farm and such but totally worth it.
@in acocoon you should see the list of approved antibiotics for animal feed...it is PAGES long, at least five times more then the amount of approved antibiotics for human use...YUCK. And how that makes any sense is beyond me!

I'm still amazed at how many people are unaware of what goes on in the food industry. I've been using organic food for a long time, but I'm still learning new things about what is going on. I didn't know that most of the CA oranges were shipped elsewhere.

I like shopping at the farms and farmers' markets better than stores. We have 2 organic farms close by, one that does vegies only and the other does meat and vegies. The one with meat just opened up a little farm store, so we've been able to get meat there during this winter since they opened the store, rather than driving across town to get it from a major store. I like seeing how the animals are treated when I go, so I know I'm putting my money in the right place. They give tours during the summer so people can learn about how they raise the animals, so they're doing a good job of educating the public. They butcher their birds, but send the pigs and cows to a butcher who does a good job with the animals. There are several other good farms here too.

If I was feeling better, I could produce more of our food. I do get some vegies in every year, but I could grow a lot more and raise chickens too. Deer and coyotes make it a little difficult, though. The deer decided they like kale this winter, so I lost some of my winter crop. Time for another pvc pipe frame with netting!

I wonder how many super bugs are being created in cows since they get antibiotics so much. It's all about the end profit, not the food value. I'm glad some countries aren't buying from us because of how animals are raised. Too bad our own country doesn't care about their people more.

I'm seeing a lot of young adults turning to a better diet here, so that's good. Their kids will be better off for it. There is still a lot of good farm land around, so I hope some of them will turn to farming before more land it used for housing. This county was growing fast before the economy went downhill. We'd probably have subdivisions in our neighborhood by now, or apartments, so I hope someone will buy up some of the land around us to use for farming. I think one large piece of land is owned by a developer, so that will be sad to see it get developed.

I'll quit babbling now. I'll end with saying that it's nice to see so many more people aware of what's going on then there was when I was young, although I lived in a city where there were more people involved with healthier diets and food, otherwise I may not have gotten so involved. Now if the prices would come down so more people could do it.

It amazes me what goes on..  Thankfully I have a butcher near me that only sells meats and chicken that are raised locally.  We have farmer's markets here too for veggies and fruits.   I also plan on starting a garden this spring!!

Teragram, my dog gets pancreatitis often, and my vet has me feed her boiled hamburger(boiled at least 45 mins to get the fat out, drained, and rinsed)and rice mixed together. It works for her, and is a little cheaper than straight chicken breasts(which I'm assuming the vet is recommending because they are low fat).

There is no such thing as happy meat, but I understand trying to find the most ethically-farmed meat that you can find.
