Yes, using an ND that is trained by ILADS is an okay way to go!
As Opugirl said, no need to do Igenex - and I'll go a bit further and say that you don't need to have any testing right now that your doc doesn't insist on. It's an extra expense that you just don't need right now. Especially since you believe you've had these infections for a while. The longer you have had these infections without adequate treatment, the more likely you will test negative as the bacteria has had plenty of time to overwhelm the immune system and form biofilms and other evasion techniques these very complex bacteria have.
So, save your money for treatment. Don't worry about "if" you have to have some other kind of treatment.
"If" that day comes, you will actually be in a better position to test positive after you've had some treatment. It's known that some treatment can bring out the bacteria, as they try to repopulate. I didn't test positive for any of the tick-borne infections until after i had completed a full 12 months of strong abx - then I tested fully CDC positive for not only Lyme, but RMSF as well - and not just once, but twice!
