Here's how I see it. If you tell people, they will just judge you for it. Most people aren't informed or reasonable enough to look at you without bias ever again.
It wouldn't matter if I told co-workers/boss. I'd still have to do my job, or quit.
In fact, if people knew I had a chronic illness (although in remission), it would severely jeopardize my reputation -- which in my line of work, would jeopardize not only my sphere of influence, but my professional position itself.
I used to tell a few people, now I tell noone. Even most reasonable people didn't know how to react, and it just made our relationship more awkward because I could tell it was always at the back of their mind during our interaction.
As for spreading lyme awareness. I guess it all depends on your friends, your work life, your whole situation. Sometimes I do give information about
ticks, lyme, etc. If I'm in the outdoors I always tell my friends to be careful and wear some sort of bug spray/cream, and I usually give a good reason why. I might even explain how dangerous and common lyme disease is. I offer my own sun block / bug block cream if they don't have any.
But I never tell people that
I have an illness. I just say that I'm informed, and they should be too.
Anyways, I'm hoping to get to the point soon where I can say I
used to have lyme disease. Then I can inform, and people will respect that I'm speaking from experience --
without holding a current judgment. :) I hope and trust that you will all get to that point as well.
