I had the MTHFR test done by Neurological Research Institute" back in October. Never thought about posting results here to get opinions.

The test looked at 30 gene points, and found 12 mutations.

Here are the 12:

MTHFR / C677T (+/-)

My LLND has said this is "pretty bad," but she really didn't elaborate. Can anyone here elaborate on these results for me....? I'm guessing this means detoxing is not just "important" for me but, "major important" for me (epsom salt baths, coffee enemas, etc. etc.).

I'm also assuming that the methylation issues are these reason that alcohol has always made me sick. I've always joked that my liver has a sense of humor, it doesn't metabolize alcohol, it just recirculates it and makes me feel like crap for days. Apparently, this statement was more accurate than I ever realized. :)

Crikey - "pretty bad" but no other info or support? That's not what someone wants to hear.

You might have noticed my other post about my results --- I did not have the extensive testing you did and I am interested so I may check it out.

I have the same alcohol issues! Detox is going to be critical for you--but also you will likely need to supplement to help support methylation, which can be quite complex.

But since receiving results I have been trying to dig into what it all means. I have been reading a lot of Dr Lynch's articles, watching his vids on YouTube. He has a list of specialists on his website who are educated in MTHFR mutations, which might be of help to you.

I recall my LLND trying a B12 injection on me... 1/10th of the "normal" amount that she'd give to anyone else. Wow, I felt like absolute crap for the next 5 days. Have no idea if it was a herx or what but, it was awful.

Interestingly, I was just looking at that very same website. :) Sadly, no listings for docs in Iowa.

Strongly suggest reading through Dr. Yasko's information on this stuff a couple of times. She outlines how to go about compensating for these mutations in her book on Autism. But you can substitute many different diagnoses in for Autism and the info would still be relevant.

There is a certain sequence in which you need to proceed in order to treat the mutations, as described at the above URL.

For the alcohol intolerance (applies to Candida detoxing, too, since Candida gives off a form of alcohol when it dies), Molybdenum is absolutely critical as the enzyme that processes alcohol relies on a co-factor enzyme that is partly made out of molybdenum.

thanks Raz. It was Amy Yasko's company that I purchased and did the test through. I'd forgotten her name until you mentioned it. I got a CD back with the results and the "resources" chapter. I've read it a couple of times but, my brain fog keeps me from understanding it all very well.

As for the alcohol.... I'm 43 years old and the last time I was in a bar, I was underage ! I literally do not drink, ever. I just don't enjoy the way it makes me feel. lol

Yes, this stuff is very complicated. I've been reading/studying it since 2003, and still feel there is much more for me to learn...

The most important thing is to pay attention to the sequence or the order in which to address the different mutations. This info can be found at the link I posted above.

Make sure you eat lots of green leafy vegetable and substitute with methylated B9 and B12.

Alcohol is from candida and yeast in your body. If that is your problem just a probiotic will not be enough. You actually need an anti fungal, prescription or natural.

Oh good! I actually personally know someone whose alcohol blood levels were so high from Candida that she would have gotten OUI if she got pulled over. How terrible!

Alcohol is a major trigger of histamine, and for those who methylation is compromised, or, genetically predisposed, alcohol is a enormous cause of symptoms ... The same can be said for foods like strawberries or any other food that induces mast cell activity and histamine release ...

DAO ( or diamine oxidase ) is talked about a lot on the MTHFR sites ... DAO is what breaks down histamine, and if there are imbalances of deficiency in minerals, essential metals ( esp copper and zinc ) and vitamins, DAO is not produced, and histamine runs rampant ...

If I might add that is was completely and totally irresponsible for your "LLND" to comment "pretty bad" - all of the things can be adjusted with proper supplementation

You can be completely fine for the rest of your life if you take the right supplements. I would say this is the least of your problems.

sknight, you listed 12 mutations out of 30 ... that means 18 were " - / - " ???

That isn't "pretty bad" ... you can definitely do this !

Tanao , yet another reason I don't drink.... histamine trigger.

And yes, 18 of the 30 tested were "-/-".

Since I have no reference to what "normal" people have for this test, I didn't know how "bad" my results were.

So you have 13 that are positive for mutation. And you're not dead yet. Guess that means I'll survive mine too. :)

I got this test done last summer after I had a phone consultation with MTHFR expert Dr Jared Skowron ( he's not a lyme doc, so I think it is OK to write his name )

Up until having the 23andMe test performed, I knew about the homozygous A1298C and none of the others ... After the results came back, Dr Skowron said "These aren't bad"

Every person on the planet will most likely have a +/- somewhere, at least a few times .... For the first 4 decades of my life, I felt great - and my genetics were the same ;)

It is the infections, traumas and toxins that flip these switches ... and the switches can be flipped back ...

Good posts Razzle.

I started Yasko ' s All in One multivitamin 2 days ago. I slept over 8 hours last night for the first time I can remember in at least 5 years. I started detoxing almost 4 weeks ago and the sleep has gradually getting longer and longer. The 1298 mutation isn't good, but it can be overcome.

Georgia, I'm glad you revisited methylation I really think it isa huge key.

I don't know how I feel about Dr. Amy's specific order of steps, but I do believe she prevents really good information.

Learning how to nutritionally supplement for my snps has made a huge difference for me. There is no way I would have gotten well without it.

I needed antibiotics (doxy and plaquenil), anti fungals and methylation support. While I was trying to get my systems back online we used herbs as they are more gentle and systems holistic.. Before opening up detox I couldn't have handled the abx.

I still can't believe how much my body reeked.

I'm slowly adding in support for my pathways but it won't be as extensive as Yasko recommends. I feel as you do, it will take a combination of things to get where I want to be.
