help, doxy giving me heartburn

Hey everyone,
I started taking doxycycline two weeks ago and last night I woke up with severe heartburn and continue to have it throughout the day:(

I read that antibiotics cause heartburn but I am scared to stop doxy.... Also I go see a LLMD in late July and I am worried he will prescribe me more antibiotics that I won't be able to handle...

Any experience this problem before? I am scared I will never get better!

Yes. It didn't the first few times on it but I was on and off it so many times it eventually began to give me heartburn so I can't take it anymore. I have acid reflux which is controlled with meds but it didn't control it while on the Doxy. It's not the only antibiotic you can take for Lyme. Some take Biaxin combined with Amoxicillin or Ceftin/Omnicef. I had no problem with Amoxicillin when I recently took it for a sinus infection. Talk with your doc about other options.

Hi, Pepcid AC works real well. Also pepto bismol can help with this and upset stomach.

Hi Tick curser,

Doxy is one of those antibiotics that need to be taken with a large glass of water, sitting up. My pharmacist advices me to sit up for at least an hour, so that the pill doesn't sit in your oesophagus any longer than necessary, it can cause irritation there.

Here's what the doctors sent me on heartburn. Hope you find relief!


Heartburn Protocol

Therapies Instructions/ Explanation

1) In some people certain foods can lower the pressure of the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) and allow stomach acid to reflux into the esophagus. If you notice that any of these foods cause heartburn you should avoid them. • Foods to consider avoiding: Fatty foods chocolate, peppermint, yellow onions, alcohol, caffeine-containing beverages such as coffee, tea, and cola

2) Avoid overeating • Having a very full stomach puts upward pressure on the lower esophageal sphincter and lets stomach contents reflux upward

3) Stop smoking if you are a smoker

4) Lose weight if you are overweight • Abdominal body fat can cause upward pressure on the stomach and regurgitation of stomach acid into the esophagus.

5) Do not eat within 2 hours of bedtime

6) Elevate the head of your bed 6 inches

7) Supplements • Acid Block (RX Vitamins: 2 capsules after each meal and before bed. This formula contains herbs that soothe the gastrointestinal tract and help prevent reflux.
• Heart Burn Free: a 10- day course of this supplement can relive heart burn in some people.
• Heart Burn TX (Vital Nutrients): 1 tsp. 3X per day
• Digestive enzymes: 1-2 capsules with each meal
• Apple cider vinegar 1-2 TBS before each meal or tincture of bitter herbs to stimulate production of your natural digestive enzymes.

• Aloe Vera Juice : ¼ cup 2X per day in water
8) Do an HCL challenge test to evaluate the possibility of low stomach acid • Do not do this if you have ulcers, gastritis, or are currently experiencing heart burn.

totally can happen - but you need not to take meds ontop of it to get rid of the heartburn. Just simply eat a good meal and you will be fine. Eat something, take the doxy, then eat something again, this way the medicine is compacted between the food and you will not get the heartburn. Also, as Mariel said - remain upright for at least a half hour afterwards. DO not take it right before bedtime. Don't worry, if you follow this plan, you will be fine!!
