Doxy - 100mg x 2 - not enough!

As I wait patiently (not!) for my Igenex results, I start thinking about my treatment.
I have called a few other ND's for back-up plan, in case I don't get treated with the current one. She wants to give me Mepron if she sees a positive result..and I'm thinking I'd like to start with doxy for a month or two, see how I react, etc. Then start treating Babesia, if she still thinks I have it...along with an abx.
So, I may be switching ND's.
One said if I tested negative, she would give me a month of Doxy - see how i respond. But, she said 200 mg twice daily is too much, and she'd give me 100 mg twice daily.

So, I'm thinking I will need to print off information that says 200 mg twice daily is the appropriate dosage of Doxy. I doubt if i'll be able to convince her though.

So, here I am - one ND wants to give me Mepron first...and the other will give me Doxy - but not enough. Neither is what I want.

I'm calling a local ND who has just started learning about Lyme disease and now will treat with abx. If she is willing to give me Doxy at appropriate dosage...I may see her and then in a month or two go to a LLND that is further away from home.

There may be an issue getting my lab results from the first ND, if I don't want to pay for another appt.

Hi Girlie,

If you take 200 mg Doxy per day that will help ease your symptoms at least. You won't necessarily make progress in getting rid of it, but it will help suppress the illness and prevent it from getting worse.

Maybe Lymepickle - but that's wasting my time. I want to treat this as soon as I can.
We're into another summer...and last summer was pure hell for me. I need to have a bit of improvement.

BTW - In March I asked my GP to give me doxy...when i first suspected it could be Lyme. She gave me 100 mg x 2 daily for 4 weeks. After about week and a half I started taking 200 mg x2 , but then that lasted only a week or so and I ran out. So total time on was 2 1/2 weeks.

I thought maybe I felt a bit better the last couple days...but very subtle, if at all. So, then i started to question whether I had Lyme.

But, since then I have read that even on the 200mg X2 it sometimes takes people a couple of months before they see anything.

I saw a video - one of the Lyme experts - can't remember his name, and he said the "challenge" should be three months to get a really good idea. If no response, you can start looking at a different diagnosis and no harm done. But, most people will get a response if they have Lyme.

This is copied from Dr B's 2008 LymeTreatment Guidelines:

"There are four types of antibiotics in general use for Bb treatment. The TETRACYCLINES, including doxycycline and minocycline, are bacteriostatic unless given in high doses. If high blood levels are not attained, treatment failures in early and late disease are common. However, these high doses can be difficult to tolerate.

For example, doxycycline can be very effective but only if adequate blood levels are achieved either by high oral doses (300 to 600 mg daily) or by parenteral administration. Kill kinetics indicate that a large spike in blood and tissue levels is more effective than sustained levels, which is why with doxycycline, oral doses of 200 mg
bid is more effective than 100 mg qid. Likewise, this is why IV doses of 400 mg once a day is more effective than any oral regimen."

Maybe get a copy and bring it with you. Also see if Dr S's Lyme Disease Solutions book has similar doxy dosing recommendations

Girlie, to my way of thinking if you paid to have the tests done, they are yours! I can't see how the ND could refuse to give them to you.

Maybe a call to Igenex to see whether they would send you your results directly in such a situation could set your mind at ease while you explore all options?

Girlie, if you want the best kill kinetics of Doxy,

It is actually best just to take 400 mg all at once daily. Not 200 mg twice daily.

This will give the highest possible concentration into the blood at once. But if you can't tolerate taking 400 mg all at once, then they offer the 200 mg twice daily.

thanks everyone!

For some reason, I now have this sense of urgency...I think it's because lately my mind/mood have been somewhat better...and I feel the need to "live" again. But, my body's saying "no" - it's actually screaming "no".

I love summer....I can't imagine another summer not going swimming, not playing tennis (ok - I know I can't do that this summer), jogging, and best of all our yearly trip to the Okanagan. This year will be especially disappointing because my son and his girlfriend have decided to come with us for the summer holiday. I'll be sooo disappointed if i'm not well enough for the trip. (It's a long drive there) We had to cancel it last year.

I'm just getting so sick and tired of this.

tickbite - I knew I had read that somewhere. It validates why I may not have responded to the dose my Dr. gave me in March.

Dr B is actually Dr. Joseph Burrascano and is a founding member of ILADS -International Lyme and Associated Diseases Society. He's also recently (a couple of years ago) helped to create a reportedly much better test for Lyme disease. So he's a pretty big deal.
