New Study: Hyperosmia in Lyme disease

This is something many of us have had experience with. If your doctor doesn't believe that it's part of Lyme disease symptoms, we now have a way to back it up - take this article to the Doc:

Hyperosmia (heighten sense of smell) in Lyme Disease.

Abstract:
"Neurological involvement in Lyme disease has been reported to include meningitis, cranial neuropathy and radiculoneuritis. While it is known that in some cases of asceptic meningitis patients may develop hyperosmia, the association between hyperosmia and Lyme disease has not previously been studied."

Conclusion:
"This first systematic controlled study showed that Lyme disease is associated with hyperosmia."

I'm worse than a sniffer dog...

On some days I can not even stand the smell of other (clean) people coming close to me.

I don't know how I'm going to tell a friend of mine not to wear perfume. It makes me feel so sick!

Margaret, my daughter has the same problem with most perfumey things. She does ok if it's a fruity scent. Fortunately, our doctor's place is a scent free one, with a sign on the outside of the door so it can't be missed before someone goes in.

Maybe if you word it carefully so she doesn't feel offended would help her. Something like "would it be possible for you to not wear perfume when we're together since it makes me so ill?" Then apologize for having to ask that of her. It can be touchy. I've had to do that with our youngest and she didn't take it very well, understandably. Now she tries not to have anything on at home and we appreciate that. I hope your friend will be understanding and take it well. Just tell her there are many Lymies that have that problem. My sense of smell isn't great and for a while I had phantom smells, mainly smoke. That was annoying. I don't have it any more.

Definitely heightened senses! My sensitivity to noise is the worst! With 3 young kids and a husband who doesn't hear that great, I'm constantly telling them to keep it down.
