Hi Sparkyjo:
I am unaware of any LLMD's in Canada. I do know of one here in BC that retired - years ago because he was treating patients with long term antibiotics and was constantly being investigated...and when they threatened to take his licence away, he retired. He now educates and does lyme research.
I suspect the MD's listed on CanLyme would only be treating with a short-term antibiotic (I only say this because I am in touch with a Lyme support group here in BC on Vancouver Island...and I have not heard of anyone seeing an MD for treatment. I correspond with the Facilitator of the group and her along with many others travel to Richmond, BC to see the ND that I see)
There is an MD in Vancouver, BC who treats using something very close to the Marshall protocol - which I believe is a long term low dose doxy regimen coupled with keeping your vitamin d levels very low. I wasn't "sold" on the treatment when i read about it.
Yes, my ND can and does prescribe antibiotics. There may be some in Ontario (ND's) who are LL - but I'm not sure if they have prescribing rights in Ontario.
The ND visits are not covered under regular medical here in BC. But, I have Blue Cross and 80% of the visits to a maximum are reimbursed.
If you did travel to see the ND in BC, after the initial consult, he would do phone follow-up appointments for a few months...so you would save money that way. - So, I guess you need to crunch the numbers and see what's more cost effective. If you go to the U.S. - how far over the border do you need to travel...and do you need to go every 4 weeks....plus, the appt. will be out of pocket - I don't think you can get reimbursed for that.
