I haven't posted in quite a while; thought I had finally turned the corner and was really on the mend. Then, after a very stressful few months, my mood started wobbling again, and a slew of physical symptoms started up. Anyway, saw my LLMD today and he told me that my latest blood work showed that I had something called MTHFR. He said this means that I have a genetic defect which causes my body to rid itself of toxins at only 10-20% of the normal rate. He feels that this is a big part of my current symptoms. He told me to add Epsom salt baths and Alka Seltzer Gold to my daily regimen and changed my abx from Rifampin to Omnicef 300 mg.
Has anyone else been told they have MTHFR? Any thoughts on this?

I am compound hetro for MTHFR and have started having symptoms a month ago...do you have lyme or is he saying your symptoms are from the MTHFR? I am waiting for test results.

Yes, I have Lyme, along with Babesia and Bartonella. My LLMD seems to think that my current symptoms are chiefly the result of Lyme compounded by the MTHFR, but I had never heard of this genetic defect before. What do you mean by "compound hetro"?

it means that I have the c677t mutation and the a1298c mutation...there are different types of mthfr, so he should have told you which one. It is pretty common a lot of people just don't know they have it and a lot of doctors don't think much of it when in reality i think it causes us a whole host of issues.

I just got my results today and I have two copies of C677T MTHFR. I was recently taken off meds due to what was possibly toxin build up. This would make some sense now. My Homocysteine levels were high normal and B12 and Folic acid through the roof due to taking supps.

I don't know what symptoms come along with this mutation yet as my LLMD hasn't explained anything to me. I also don't know a good protocol other than brushing, Epson baths, BURBUR drops, etc.. I know I will be switching over to Methyl type B vitamins and Folic acid.

Just make sure you take the broken down form of folic ... not the kind you buy at the store...our bodies cant convert it...

I have a question...why were you all getting tested now for the mthfr? Why would a lyme doc test for that now??

A lyme Dr. would test you for the MTHFR gene when he thinks you may not be detoxing well.
Some Drs may do the test regardless.

If you're in treatment for a while and don't seem to be getting better, then it could be that you're not able to rid the toxins from your body...which can be difficult if you have the gene.

I don't know a lot about it...but maybe someone more knowledgeable will chime in.

Download the free e-book Autism, Pathways to Recovery. Read what it says about MTHFR and the genes that code for the enzymes. It is a very important book for learning about genetic problems with detoxing.

I have also MTHFR mutation, but the "softest" one: C667T hetero.

MethylB12+methylfolate+gluthatione is the key - they claim. I have just got my dose of them :)

I have 2 copies of the C667, my doctor tested me on my first visit along with a slew of other blood work incl blood to send to Igenex. He started me on 5-MTHF (l-methylfolate) and methyl B-12! Sounds like I might need the glutathione.

I've been in treatment since last November on herbals and December started ANX and I am feeling better about 85% so far.

For detox I consume lots of lemon water, Epsom salt bath every night, milk thistle & dandelion, Pinella, parsley, burbur.
