firewood and ticks

We burn wood for heat as well - my husband always brings it in and I must admit I didn't even think about the possibility of ticks!

I don't think spraying it is a good idea. I wonder if treating the area in which it is stored with permethrin would work since it kills ticks on contact.

I'm not too crazy about chemicals in the home, though....hopefully, someone can offer a more "natural" approach.

Heck, I'm now paranoid petting my son's dog and sitting on his sofa since he and his wife are always pulling ticks off the dog.....and it's virtually impossible to see the nymphs - 70% of which carry Lyme.

Treating all of the firewood would be quite a job, so doing like the others suggested about treating the ground around it would be a better idea. Having a wood box next to the door outside would keep it closer to your house without having to store much inside and that would reduce the amount getting in. Good luck!

There can definitely be ticks in firewood and Christmas trees, too! I know a little girl who was infected in the dead of winter from either the Christmas tree or firewood. Her patents installed gas fireplaces and now use an artificial tree each year.
