Can Lyme or co-infections be sexually transmitted?

Hi everyone,

My test results just came back and I'm positive for Mycoplasma and Rickettsia. Negative for Lyme but the doctor is treating me anyway as he thinks it was a false negative.

Anyway my question is: does anyone know if any of these infections be sexually transmitted? I have a partner so I'm pretty worried at the moment..

It is looking like they can be sexually transmitted. The bacteria has been found in both semen and female vaginal secretions. Too be safe, I would use protection until you have been treated and are symptom free for a few months.

Thanks for your reply. I've been with my partner for a year and I've also been sick for a year so I'm afraid it might be too late for that :( So worried

Just keep an eye on his health. If he gets any symptoms that seem like lyme, get him to a LLMD ASAP.

In the meantime try not to worry.

I recently saw an interview that one of the top Lyme and co's docs, Dr. Horowitz, did at an Autoimmune conference, and he said that some of the spouses of the Lyme patients he treated wanted to get tested since they had unprotected sex.

They tested highly positive on the antibody tests, but reported little to no symptoms, which indicates that while it may be sexually transmitted, it probably usually doesn't present the threat that an acute infection would. Hopefully. I've used condoms since I got the bull's eye rash, but watching the issue closely-lol

I have shown signs for 16 years now but my spouse didn't show any till about 7 yrs ago and we both just got diagnosed about a year ago. Our Igenex bands are about the same, his showing more than mine. I was so sick in the beginning that I wanted to die but I haven't seen that in him. Just be careful.

There is some pretty overwhelming evidence of there that this is the case:

"The researchers say their most interesting finding is that one of the married couples had identical strains of the bacteria, suggesting one had transmitted it sexually to the other."

The key words "identical strains".

I think it is. My llmd says it is sexually transmitted. I am pretty sure I gave it that way to my husband. We can't know for sure, he may have unknowingly gotten a tick. But I do know a number of months into my active infection my husband started to feel rundown so I had him get the igenex test and it was positive. Luckily he doesn't have much symptoms but he is breing treated for it now and I am pretty sure he got it that way.

Interesting to read this. I'd not even considered the possibility of passing it on to my partner. That said I have had zero sex drive since this started (I didn't realise it was a symptom till I started reading recently).

It was a major complaint from him, maybe when I pass on this info it'll stop his whining??!!
