Those of you who are aware of my story know that I was questioning my ILADS-referred LLMD's treatment.
He started me on amoxicillin since he thought I'd had a reaction to the doxycycline Rx'd by my PCP. And, I remember him shaking his head when I asked him about combination therapy.
I saw him again after being on amoxicillin for 4 wks. and he was disturbed about the large number of symptoms I'd developed when taking it.
I remember him telling me that he thought I needed to go back on doxycyline...and we discussed proper dosing, etc. I actually experienced many improvements (yay!)
I just saw him today and discovered that I was supposed to ADD the doxy to my amoxicillin!!!
This was obviously not clear to me at all during my appointment last month....especially since he only Rx'd one month of amoxicillin the month before. If anything, he should have asked me if I needed a new Rx.
He apologized for the miscommunication and I'm now back on amoxicillan and Doryx brand of doxy that is supposedly more tolerable.
I'm not the type of person to make an error such as this. I maintain a detailed, daily symptoms diary and incorporate that into a symptoms spreadsheet. I use a pillminder to keep track of my supplements and cell phone alarms to make sure my meds are spaced appropriately.
I've learned a lesson after this: I will make sure I repeat any proposed treatment plan back to the doctor....to make sure I have it right.
I hope others learn from my mistake.
