BIg splash in lyme news--claritin to kill lyme. Anyone using it?

As per news, promising research shows claritin kills Lyme Borrelia. Anyone tried it? Does it work for cos? Is there a protocol? Can u take it w. abx and antimicrobials? Does it cause a herx? Sorry about all the questions, but this is kind of exciting. M

Wow. Already, huh? Can u take it with the other stuff ur taking? I'd better start stocking up, as I'm sure there will be a big spike in rices soon like there was with Doxy.

Yes, there's no problem combining it with the modified cowden's I'm on, and the supplements. I've never had problems taking antihistamine before, but better check it wity your doctor, I don't know what you're taking now (last time you posted a pretty long list, the new protocol you got from your dr, I can't remember...)...

I take Benadryl, but it doesn't help with Lyme and cos.

I have had the hardest time getting in touch with my LLMD, and her staff.

Marie, I'm on Monolaurin and Cryptolepsis right now; then, will be pulsing with azithro. and rifampin. I don't remember if there was anything else on the protocol.

Oh, just saw your post BMO. That's not so encouraging. I guess the study would only be for Bay area patients. Anyway, it seems to me it would take a long time for that whole process to go through.

Regardless, I guess it couldn't hurt to try.

I've been taking antihistamines (including Claritin) for a long time and never had any sort of Lyme-killing response.

Claritan has side effects, and i thought it specifically mentioned desloratine as the active ingredients, there needs to be more research and trials to prove that it works, its better to be safe and not jump the gun so quickly

I have been using it for six weeks. Two doses a day. I have been going through the Herxheimer since about the third day. The last week has been like... WOW! Every Herxheimer reaction has been elevated times five. I'm looking for individuals that are using it as well. There's very little research that has been done. I did contact Bayer to see if they are doing any research. I never heard back from them. I do know this, it is doing something. Otherwise the spirochetes would not be dying and releasing so many toxins into my system. However there are a lot of spirochetes and toxins to remove from my system. I have had Lyme's for at least 22 years. I have Lyme's, Bartonella and other co-infections.

I read that too... only six weeks after I had begun using it. So I only know what I've experienced. I could be wrong but I am thinking someone's math may be a bit off. Because I believe these Herxheimer reactions are directly related to the Claritin. Lyme's gave me the lovely gift of serious allergic reactions. Three of them being preservatives, Dichlorophyl and antibiotics, especially antibiotics given to meat such as fish, chicken, and beef. At my last Lyme's doctor visit I told him about this situation and I that I have been taking Benadryl like a junkie. He looked at me and said, "add Clairatin... take it twice a day."
Note: He is a highly respected doctor in the area Lyme's disease. I understand that a lot of people say that but this one really is. And the only doctor in 300 miles of me that isn't a Lyme's novice or simply clueless. Still, he didn't say much more about it other than, "It may help with your Lyme's. Let me know about your reaction. Call the office." My reaction has been the start of 22 years worth of Herxheimer in a six week period of time that doesn't show any signs of slowing down yet. So is it actually the Claritin? Being the fact that it built-up over six weeks to a very powerful Herxheimer, I'm thinking, yes it is the Claritin. Sure there are times that I question if It's just the drug I am reacting to. But it's a definite Herx. And the one thing that does help with that is, of course, detox! Detox! Detox!... Detox! I figure 22 years of Lyme's is a lot for any medications to cut through. So I have decided I'm giving it six months. Hopefully it won't take that long for the Herxheimer reaction to slow down. All I have is time and hope because this disease has brought me to my knees. So unless something catastrophic happens as a result of taking Claritin, I will stay on it for the rest of my life. As for co-infections, that's a separate battle in the same war.
Note: I am doing H2O therapy to push the spirochetes out of my bones and cartilage. I started that 5 1/2 weeks into the process. I'm taking this new round of treatment very seriously. :) Time and money are running out.

Yes, the study called for 400 mgs of Clariton a day - the normal dosage is only 10 mgs. So they would have to find a way to overcome the dramatic drying effect it would have on the sinuses and whatever other issues there would be with that high of a dose.

I've used Clariton twice a year, every year for a couple of months each time because I'm quite allergic to rag weed and it blooms twice a year here - lucky me.

I honestly can't say that it's not helping you, StormPotion - only that the science isn't there to back it up.

So who's to say that you are feeling better just because you are now controlling the allergic reaction going on in your body?

My point is that we have to do what works for us. You are treating with Clariton and you are feeling better - that's what matters most. It's just that we don't know if it's because it's helping your allergic reactions or if it's treating the Lyme. In the study, they used 400 mgs a day - that's 40 pills a day, since each one is only 10 mgs.

Keep on doing what you need to do to feel better, just be careful about thinking that it's killing the Lyme bacteria. You might not know that until later.

Looks like dosages would be harmful but we do need some non abx drugs to combat lyme.

Since it's been about a year since this thread was active, has anyone got updates to report? did claritin end up helping eradicate the lyme and symptoms in general?

Droid1226 on other forum took outrageous amounts and it did not help symptoms. ..it blocks manganese but we need manganese too...i wish ..i take some whe histamine from herx and bvt get to be too much but vit c is better
