I just wanted to see if anyone has it. We're fixing up our daughter's room so she can have a change and enjoy her room more. Pergo is so thin and if it gets a scratch, it's white. We looked at one brand from Sweden, which is better than all the others we looked at. It can be sanded 3 times, whereas the others couldn't. It costs more too, of course.

We have solid oak flooring in our family room and kitchen and that's what I'd rather put in her room so I could choose non toxic finishes for it, but it takes more time and we have to have someone come in and sand it, then we'd put the finish on. I just don't want to put toxic stuff in her room and I'm going around in circles with the research on the alternatives. There are so many brands.

Having a solid floor will help with the dust and dust mites, so that's why she and us chose a solid floor instead of more carpet.

Other mods, let me know if you want this off of here and I'll delete it.

You don't want to buy the flooring that comes from Siberia - for a couple of reasons - it comes from the forests where the Siberian tigers population has diminished to only 500.
Also, it is being treated with formaldehyde in the processing. (I can't remember all the details, but I think it gets shipped to China for processing)

There was a segment on 60 minutes or 16X9...or one of those news shows a while back.

You certainly don't want formaldehyde in your home.

Girlie I think you are talking about the 60 minutes piece on Lumbar Liquidators. There has been a ton of controversy over that.

I'm on my second laminate. I took the first one (Formica brand) out after 15+ years when I did a remodel. It held up perfectly and I used to buy my son t-shirts that said "been there, wrecked that". The flooring survived my two kids and two dogs. Pergo is a known name but it's not well rated. If you go to a flooring store you can see the difference in the thickness of the top layer which is where the finish is. The thicker that is, the better the quality.

We bought laminate for a house that we are renting and it didn't hold up very well because the tenants decided it to keep moving their beds around and wrecked the part that the bed was on considerably. When you go to the store, they will take a piece of metal, likely polished eg: house keys to prove it won't scratch. Don't fall for that one LOL

The rest did hold up and we could always change the pieces that got scratched as they won't sand. I doubt your daughter would be so reckless, so if you are looking for alternatives, we bought them already finished, put them in ourselves, and it is very easy to do. They've been in for 10 years. I think it cost us around $1000 for about 2 10x10 rooms, but that was 10 years ago. It is relatively easy to take out the pieces that were damaged and replace them with new ones yourself if you have the tools. We have lots of tools already so that was not a problem. Pretty clean cut, no sanding or finish.

The best one we found had a wood veneer (I think it was called a veneer) that could be sanded up to 3 times. It's spendy though and she doesn't want us to spend a lot on it. The others just have a thin layer of laminate and there are many brands, so it's hard to get enough info. on the toxins that might be in them.

We installed our solid wood floors, so her bedroom wouldn't take long to do and it's easy. Some of it comes with a finish on it, but I think I'd do the finish myself, body willing. There are some good, safe products for that. So that would be the safest as far as the off gassing goes and it holds up well. Our floors are 20 years old and doing fine.
