Your HPA (hypothalmus, pituitary and adrenal) axis, your intestinal functions and neurotransmitter functions work in sync with one another, sending/receiving/interpreting signals for hormone production and use and many other mechanisms. For many reasons, lyme & coinfections and other common viral and fungal infections can throw the system out of balance, and once it's out of balance, it tips itself further out of balance w/ lyme & co. (kind of like a heavy blanket in the washer).
Before you go the long mile of a spinal tap, I would do some simple saliva tests w/ a naturopath, which will give you a good picture of where your imbalances might be. Neurotransmitter and adrenal functions can be measured w/ the saliva tests and supplemented fairly easily although recalibration does take awhile.
Also, many people have DNA mutations (also easily tested w/ saliva swab) of transmitter functions, so we start off w/ a little imbalance that gets exacerbated w/ the infections.
It's also likely with anyone who is on abx or antibacterial herbals that they have damaged the GI tract and a yeast/fungal overgrowth has thrown gut flora out of balance. Your gut and your brain are very connected many psychological imbalances begin w/ gut imbalances and as someone previously mentioned, neurotoxins from too much yeast significantly affect brain function (fogginess, loss of memory, depression, problems w/ sight, muscle pain, etc.).
You can do simple stool tests that will show both leaky gut issues and yeast overgrowth and blood test will show if you have systemic yeast/fungal overgrowth (although tests are not as reliable as what your symptoms would indicate). We've had a couple of recent discussions on antifungals here on the forum.
Please let us know if you have more q's!
