I was diagnosed by my LLMD and PCP with cognitive impairment. Surprise lol. My PCP wants me to use my GPS everytime I drive. I had a few experiences where I couldn't remember how to get to a friends house, going 3 hrs to my daughters and not remembering if I lived North or South, coming off exit and not recognizing anything, etc.
NOW certain words when trying to read make no sense. Example the word coyote I can not pronounce nor do I remember what the animal looks like. I'll be talking to someone and they will ask a question and I wont have any idea what we were talking about.
I feel this is progressively worse. And its scaring me.
Is this normal, permanent. Does it only get worse.
Please help.

Normal, yes. Permanent? No, at least not anywhere near the level you're experiencing.

Does it only get worse? Only if you don't get proper treatment. You need to be killing off the infections.

You need lots of detoxing and body support (supplementation), and, again, the right method of killing off the infections, whether it's antibiotics or herbals, or both, which is something your LLMD should be helping you figure out.

On top of that, your doctor, I'm sure you could rely on some of the people here for a bit of help as far as which direction you should be heading as well.

I'm afraid I can only offer you basic suggestions.

Cognitive impairment is what people refer to as neuro Lyme. With treatment you should get better. What I found is that since treatment causes die and die off creates toxins in your system, sometimes you get a bit worse before you see the improvement.

It's part of the disease for those of us that were not diagnosed right away and/or for those of us whose immune systems were overwhelmed with other issues.

It should not be permanent as it is a symptom of the disease. I know that I don't remember details of last summer and that's not normal for me. I also know that I'm not sure that I remember how to do some functions of my job that were second nature for me. With those I'm pretty sure I will remember how to do those tasks once I try again or call the support and speak to them for a minute. It just feels odd after doing my job for 20+ years to question how.

I think your real concern is -is your intelligence effected and I'm comfortable saying NO it's not. It will be back to how it was before once the disease is controlled.

I've been off work for two years now...and I'm concerned about relearning what I've forgotten, along with all the new changes...it's all computer work....

But, I think it's normal to be apprehensive when we're not fully healed...I think as I get better cognitively, my confidence will come back...(I hope?)

I have trouble pronouncing certain words, too. But, it is getting better already.

A few times when i was in the middle of a herx, I asked my husband to repeat himself...and when he did, I said "I don't know what you are talking about!" ( And I said it quite indignantly...) He repeated himself..and I said something about it not making any sense.

It's scary, but we have enough members on here who have been through that, and have said with treatment, it gets better...and I hold onto that.

I had to stop working due to neuro lyme. And yes, I go lost driving to the grocery store.

But after pretty intensive treatment (IV ABX), my brain came back, completely, over the course of a couple of weeks. I am back at my old (intellectually demanding) job and do not get lost going to the store!

So sucky and scary as it is right now, this is not permanent damage and will get better as you treat.
