Amox- 1500mg 3x/day for 11 year old?? Yikes!!

A bit concerned about such a high dose of amoxicillin (1500mg 3X/day) for my son! Is this a normal dose for a child with Lyme, babesia and Bart? I can't imagine how his stomach would tolerate it!? Also starting Zithromax and Artemesia.


Thanks for any thoughts!!!

It goes by weight, so what's his weight?

It's 50 mg/kg/day - then divided into three doses.

That would mean your son would have to weigh 90 kg to take 4500 mg per day of Amox.

(50X90 = 4500 ) 4500 (1500 x 3 daily)

okay 78 X 50 = 3900

1300 mg three X daily.

I guess it's not that far off. Do you mind me asking how old your son is?



I took 1000 three times daily and I am 61 kg (but not a kid, obviously)


Also, is he taking the Probenecid with it? Due to the Amox short half life of approx. one hour, the Probenecid is taken to keep the levels in the blood up longer.

Treatment guidelines for these infections call for pediatric doses to be "50 mg/kg/day divided into q8h doses"

That translates into 50 mgs for every 2.2 lbs (which is actually 1777.5 mgs)every 8 hours - or 3 times a day. So the 1500 mgs is correct - but it needs to be combined with another abx like probenecid because it doesn't stay in the blood stream long enough without it.

78 pounds, not kg Girlie.;) he is 11 yo. And no probenecid. We haven't started the protocol yet as I think the 4500 mg a day is too high....and it appears to be!

So 1500mg divided into three doses is more reasonable for a 78 pound child, correct? Sorry....I'm not good at conversions!!

Actually, please read my posts - your son needs to have 5,332.5 mgs a day total. It needs to be broken up into 3 doses though. So the 4500 mgs is not at all too high!

Lyme is a highly complex bacteria - more complex than most so it has to have very strong abx to battle it or your son will not get the infection under control. We are quoting ILADS treatment guidelines

50mg x 35.38 kg=1769 mg divided into 8 hour doses = 590mg three times a day.

That burscanno page says its DIVIDED into 8 hour doses....not given in 8 hour doses....right?

I got 583 mg every 8 hours. so close to your calc's Not sure.

Not Sure - Do you think the 1500 that the Dr. Prescribed is the daily total perhaps which is 500 mg every 8 hours(a little on the low side though but it's good that Zithromax will be paired with it)

And my # was rounded and approximate, too.

I am going to clarify that tomorrow, Girlie. The doc wants me to review all inactive ingredients to make sure it's safe for my son (EOE) before they write the scrips.
