Is this normal?!

I took tetracycline and rifampin at 3:45. At around 4:15, I burped, and a puff of white smoke came out of my nose and burned like hell. I immediately started blowing my nose and spitting up mucus which were all orange. I'm assuming the discolored mucus is from the rifampin, though I've never had this before - only orange pee. Why did a puff of powdery smoke come out of my nose? I put a call in to my LLMD but I have no idea when I will hear back.

I'm so sorry, Teejay. That puff of "smoke" was the powder from your pills - I'm assuming it was the tetracycline since it was white. The capsule dissolved, but the gas bubble that created that burp caught some of the powder inside and brought it up - or it was stuck to your throat and the capsule dissolved and the burp brought it up.

Seems like you should be doing something to aid your digestion though if this keeps happening. If it was just a one time occurrence, then it's nothing to worry about. Just be sure to drink plenty of water and maybe even eat a little bit of something after taking your pills to make sure that they make it all the way down to your stomach (just a few bites of something) and don't stay in your throat. Should pills stay in the throat, it can damage the tissues.

I've had that, with certain supplements. I wondered what it was. Looked like smoke. Thought I'd started a fire in me or something, or, like, one of those science experiments gone wrong. Mix that with that and BOOM. Ha..

Anyway, hope it doesn't turn out to be too problematic for you. Maybe Trav's suggestions will help..
