Easiest antibiotics on your stomach?

I've been taking doxy and omnicef for three months and have developed really bad reflux and nausea. When I see my doctor next I want him to switch me to an easier antibiotic for my stomach. I also want to start a cyst buster since I haven't been on one yet.

I was going to ask him about minocycline and tinidazole since I heard it helped a friend who had trouble with doxy. She also said tinidazole is easier on the GI tract than other cyst busters. Will these drugs be easier on my GI tract? Does anyone have any recommendations? (I tried zithromax for a short time but it made me very nauseous and sick)

I know a couple of people that had a hard time with antibiotics and they had to switch to herbs.

Jut remember that is always an option. See what your doctor says.

I am so sorry. I was very nauseous with antibiotics and I got the dry heaves a couple of times. That was a whole new experience for me that I never want to revisit.

I also switched to herbs but for another reason.

I had a bad reaction to Omnicef it pretty much caused a chronic sore throat. Not the first time I've heard people be sensitive to cephalosporins. Before you give up on abx you should try different combos to see what you can tolerate. For me I can't handle cephalosporins or sulfa class drugs but macrolides and tetracyclines seem to be fine.

Not sure of your particular situation but I did very well on Tinidazole. I like the idea of trying it with mino. Maybe you start one at a time to get tolerated first?

Thanks Rikky1 I think I'll ask him about trying that. Are you suppose to pulse tinidazole? (every other day?)

which form of doxy are you taking? the tablet form is easier on the stomach than the capsule. Also, are you sandwiching in the doxy with food? i ate, then took the doxy, then ate again, then drank a glass of water and was fine. Initially it was hurting my throat too bc I just wasn't eating enough with it. I do know some people actually coat the tablet with yogurt and swallow it that way. There are plenty of things you can do. If doxy is indeed working for you - I would try these methods first. It does take a few days for the throat soreness to fade.

It is to my knowledge that amoxicillin and penicillin are the easiest on the stomach, but they are rarely used for lyme.

My doctor said to take 2 fiber pills 10min before eating and then take the antibiotics right before my meal. This seemed to work well for a month before my reflux and nausea started. And I do take the capsules :( Do you think taking the doxy mid way into a meal would be better?

sean.scott i always take my pills after i eat. i'm thinking this way there's already stuff in there and it can mix in and not irritate my stomach as much. not sure if its scientific but it works for me. i took mepron for a long time and had to eat a high fat meal to get best absorption. if i put the mepron in first i might upset my stomach and not get as much benefit as it gets absorbed into the bloodstream first.

yes, try taking it midway like I did, or entirely after you eat. it made a HUGE difference. and maybe you can look into getting the tablets instead.

but hold on, which fiber pills are you taking? if it is fibercon or polycarbophil you should NOT take it with doxycycline as it may lower the effectiveness of the antibiotic.

Thanks Chapelle I'll try taking it midway through my meal. I'll also ask about tablet form when I see my dr next week. I'm taking citrucel which contains methylcellulose. My dr recommended that or Metamucil. Should I be ok taking that?

I was also reading your old posts about candida and you seem like an expert. I'm taking grapefruit seed extract twice a day. Should that be enough to prevent a yeast infection? Would nystatin or something else be better?

I honestly would make sure you take citrucel 2 hrs away from the antibiotics. Why does your doctor have you taking that anyway? i would also be concerned about the sugar content.....do you have constipation issues?

GSE is supposed to be a very good cyst buster for lyme and yes, it is used for candida. It is fine for you to be taking it, but what is far more important is that you are taking a good probiotic - that is used to prevent candida. which one are you using? it should be at least 50 billion units.

my doctor had me on nystatin almost during my entire treatment, but that was bc I did indeed have a candida issue. I would only take nystatin if it was necessary. If you have a white tongue and do indeed have GI issues, you may want to consider it.

He said it helps the food and medicine to move through my system quickly (in a bulk form) to avoid reflux and upset stomach. Apparently it hasn't been working very well but it does keep me regular haha.

I didn't take any probiotics my first few weeks which was a mistake. The past two months I've been taking Flora 42billion by Udos choice (8 strains). It says it maintains a healthy yeast balance. Or I sure hope it does. I also have ultra flora 50 billion with 10 strains. I also have kefir with lunch. Despite all this I am still getting reflux :( I think I killed all my good flora and I can't seem to fix it.

ok, yeah, not taking probiotics initially can mess your gut up. are you on the no sugar no dairy no gluten diet? bc that will surely help.

I'm on a low sugar and no dairy diet but I haven't cut out gluten yet. I will soon but it's hard for me.

Any suggestions on how to repair my gut further? No taking any probiotics for the first few weeks probably wiped out my entire gut flora. I feel like its a losing battle and my reflux is only going to get worse the longer I'm on antibiotics. I recently started taking saccharomyces boulardii by jarrow but I haven't noticed a difference.

I just want my gut to settle down so I can continue treatment. I'm suppose to have a throat scope next week but I don't think they will be able to help me very much.
