Good article, I too have mostly lost faith in the medical system.
I think we have created this monster by the medical school selection criteria that mainly look for people good at rote memorization and regurgitation rather than out of the box thinking. We then charge them incredibly high tuition and then have to pay them 300k a year in order for them recoup their student loans. We as a society also have this god-like reverence for doctors which only feeds their arrogance.
In reality medical doctors have an average IQ of 120 which is like 5 points more than the average college grad. They were just the kids who were slightly sharper and more studious. They aren't rocket scientists and probably are more prone to groupthink as they have a huge incentive to not rock the boat and just keep cashing their fat paychecks.
I agree with gregkdc in that Lyme is just the tip of the iceberg. It was this book that really pulled back the curtains for me and led me to start self-treating my stealth infections:
www.amazon.com/Plague-Time-Stealth-Infections-Ailments/dp/0684869004The entire medical system is on the brink of a complete paradigm shift but very few of the current generation want to jeopardize their lucrative careers and come to terms with how much damage they've done to countless patients through their willful ignorance.
The only solace I find is that the current generation of doctors will soon come to be viewed as completely ridiculous as those who previously practiced blood letting through leeches and frontal lobotomies. It's not a profession that is generally judged favorably by posterity.
