Rikki,
Like suggested by jrpsf, monitoring what is happening at that moment is so important. Often it isn't racing at all....
I had true "racing" last summer when I would deal with Hashimoto's flares - tachycardia (over 100) and high episodes of BP. Didn't know about the parasite load or lyme in my body at the time. I got the true racing under control with magnesium.
Since treating Lyme, I get the flutter or feeling like my heart is rolling down a staircase sometimes. Like jrpsf, it is LOW pulse and lower BP. Actually, since beginning parasite treatment 2 months ago, I no longer have a fast pulse or high BP...not once.
So start by keeping track of pulse and BP - i bought a fingertip pulse reader on a lanyard to keep with me, plus a BP monitor. Start seeing what is truly going on, then go from there.
One other tachycardia incident I had was from taking a large B-12 sublingual tab "on a whim" - not knowing my potassium level was low. It caused immediate tachycardia and was very scary. B-12 draws from potassium stores, so it made my already low potassium worse.
