Question about thyroid - Hashimoto's

I have posted before that my husband was put on T4 a few years back - symptoms were fatigue, joint pain.

His test results showed Low T4 and high TSH, along with TPO antibodies.

My question: Since this could happen due to a tumor on the thyroid...shouldn't an ultrasound be ordered to rule that out as a cause..and removed if necessary? I know they're not always cancerous..but what if he has one and it is?

Is it standard to just medicate...and not check for a tumor?

Though ive never had it done, im told its routine. Moreso for Graves, as the nodules themselves can make extra hormones. Im so stuck with medical bills and trying to get answers as far as if I truly have Lyme or not that I never had it done. But in my opinion, anyone with a thyroid issue needs checked

I think I have a resource that might help you with this...I have Hashimoto's (TPOab over 1,000) - just so you know that I have done my homework to date!

Dr. Izabella Wentz (she was deathly ill from Hashimotos and now is helping so, so many people) was my lifeline when I first got diagnosed. Her website is so amazingly helpful and I think you will find many answers you are looking for (plus so much more great information!!).

Most importantly is that you and your husband need to advocate for what you need. If an ultrasound will give you peace of mind, try to find someone who will order it if your current doctor won't.

She is also how I "got to Lyme" - she is all about finding the root cause of Hashi's and, after trying all of her suggestions, it was parasite infection that finally turned my thyroid around.

Ironically, it was my former GP and it's now my current GP who've ordered thyroid ultrasounds for me. (I have Graves' Disease - was hyper and then joined the 20% who go hypo after remission).

None of the 3 endos I saw ordered the test....and they didn't know how to medicate - for hyper or hypo.

Many healthy people have nodules on their thyroids and discover them after testing "in the area".

Once nodules are discovered, it's prudent to monitor them and have any larger than 1cm biopsied.

Thyroid cancer accounts for only a small percentage of thyroid nodules. It is not a place that many get tumors at all. I would put that out of your thinking. I know, hard to do. So then be adamant that you want an ultrasound. Heck you are paying for it.

I don't understand why we have to fight to get what we want medically. I just think it is sad.

"Heck you are paying for it". Actually, we don't pay for our testing or imaging/ultrasounds. It's covered under our Provincial health care.

But, if it's something that should be done...I want my husband to have it done...

Hashi since '97, gee my specialty LOL.

For some reason , I didn't get ultra sound until 2005, then every 18 months following. Its 15 minutes of time.

If a nodule is found, the size and any growing is tracked. Over 10mm in any direction is grounds for further suspicion.

Thyroid cancer is the most curable cancer there is, but with the addition of thyroid med. NOTE: thyroid hormone has zero effect on nodules.

Many in the population have a nodule on their thyroid! - without thyroid issues at all, weird fact.

I want a new thyroid. They're always out of stock at the thyroid warehouse.

So, he should be asking for an ultrasound, then...or not bother...he's been treating with T4 for about 4 years now (can't remember)

Yes, he should get an ultrasound since he has elevated TPO. And repeat 2nd time in 6-12 months if a nodule is present to get an idea if its growing. Not growing?- then space it out more like I do.

i'll see if i can get him to request one...it's difficult getting him to go to the Dr. (what he don't know...won't hurt him attitude sometimes)
