Lactoferrin can be beneficial but it must be absorbed. Liposomal lactoferrin has been shown in studies to be effective in reducing inflammation where non-liposomal lactoferrin had no positive effects.
An interesting correlation is that liposomal lactoferrin has shown to benefit in periodontal disease in multiple studies. When investigating further, anaerobes from the GI tract like Bilophila wadsworthia have been cultured from the mouth and saliva from non-healthy individuals. Could it be that they are able to survive in a biofilm along the gums and the liposomal lactoferrin is able to weaken their stronghold?
Our bodies are fighting a multi-prong attack against pathogens and all of this fighting on different fronts takes its toll on our body. The pathogenic assault occurs mostly in the GI tract, in the bloodstream, and in the interstitial fluids. The mucus membranes and synovial fluids are other areas that must be defended against pathogens. When we get Borrelia burgdorferi or something else that is persistently pathogenic, it weakens us to the point where bacteria from our GI tract are able to live in other places like our mouth, blood, vagina, and in biofilms. When this happens, killing Borrelia may not be enough for our health to improve. If you are sick and have not responded well to conventional treatment, it may be because other pathogens like yeast, Bilophila, or Prevotella have grown to such high numbers that your immune response is overwhelmed. Reducing all pathogens would lead to a better physiological outcome. Figuring out what you have is the difficult part. It is my opinion that the essential oils may help along with various pungent seeds like oregano or Black seeds. Lactoferrin can be beneficial as well.
Just make sure your lactoferrin is liposomal lactoferrin.
