Hi k07 -
Ugh - sorry you and the family are dealing with this. No fun.
Catalyst
The heavy metals will definitely create an acidic pH environment and this is very hospitable for y/f. And of course antibiotics and even a wet environment can assist y/f overgrowth (I had considerably more y/f issues when I moved from an arid environment to a coast environment).
Testing
You could skip over the testing for now. You clearly all have y/f issues (I have no doubt) and only if specific protocols don't work is it important right now to test. With all of the testing I did and all of the crazy y/f symptoms, I don't have a lot of faith that the saliva, blood or stool tests really provide a lot of info for us--at least not as much as our symptoms (with the exception of the stool test telling us which antifungals are reactive to the strains found). I had marginal loads on all of my tests yet my body was raging with y/f but the stool test did tell me which antifungals to use. Sometimes, the antifungals can be ineffective for certain strains - stool tests like Doctor's Data will identify about
12 common natural and Rx antifungals and will indicate how effective they are to the y/f strains found in the stool.
However, MDs might need tests to order antifungals. Horowitz can test if he wants or if the response to these anti fungal suggestions isn't ideal. But your work with him will be more efficient if the bulk of the y/f is already cleared before you all get started, anyway (and he may even be grateful that he has a less complicated problem to solve!)
Treat
I'd get someone to prescribe a couple of things ASAP - I wouldn't wait for Horowitz appt. You can start the anti-Candida diet ASAP too as well as detoxing for everyone.
Nystatin
Most strains will respond to PURE Nystatin powder - skip the pills and liquids (they are full of fillers and are more expensive - the liquid is geared towards kids and tastes better than the powder (powder tastes a little like dirt or clay) but the liquid actually has sugar in it). Have the prescribing MD follow this dosing guideline - you can get prescript
ion filled at most compounding pharmacists - let me know if you have q's about
it:

The allover itching or tickling (that gets worse at night), itchy scalp, heart palps/fog/vaginal yeast, the acne around the neck/back/chest, phlegmy throat (post-nasal drip) are all very clear symptoms of yeast/fungal issues.
Monistic 1 also burned me and it threw me into a panic the pain was so severe - I hopped into a bath and desperately tried to scoop out the medicine. Immediate relief. Man, I don't know what is in that stuff or why I responded to it that way but I think it might just be a combination of a different strain of yeast and very irritated tissues around the vaginal
opening. I think your urologist is probably right that the y/f just spread to the urethra.
Systemic anti fungal
I would get you started on a systemic anti fungal (Diflucan is the most common by my y/f strain was not receptive to it--and if you reacted to the Diflucan the same way I did I am a little suspicious that the Diflucan might not be helpful). Get a week's dose (100 or 200mg/day) and if that doesn't work, move on to a different one.
Ketoconazole worked best for me but it does have a black box warning for people with liver and adrenal issues. Ironically, my liver enzymes skyrocketed after taking it but came right back down with milk thistle seed and burdock root. I had severe adrenal issues at the time I took it but had no indication that the Ketoconazole made it worse and I was on the Ketoconazole for a year. My adrenals are doing great now.
Are you saying that the minocycline solved the rosacea-like rashes for you and your husband?
Kids
Do the kids have more than just symptoms on the skin (was not sure about
the vaginal infection--is it interior or just in the folds of the exterior skin/tissues?) Examples - white/yellow coating on the tongue, appetite a little low but they crave only sweets, ear or throat aches? I'll wait for your answer and then share my thoughts on a systemic for them.
Lyme & co
I have read in multiple sources that infected ticks can also carry fungus and they can be part of the coinfections. Also, the y/f overgrowth likely overwhelmed your immune system, allowing the lyme & co to get a foot in the door or increase their numbers if the infection(s) were already present. Or vice versa.
But I would treat them as two separate issues that have distinct symptoms. When both are flaring, sometimes it's hard to tell which symptoms belong to which condition. But it's optimal for the lyme & co if your y/f is well under control before you start treatment. This helps your immune system from getting overwhelmed but also ensures much less confusion about
symptoms, which will be very helpful for your lyme & co treatment.
