Bone broth, how to?

I know bone broth is really good for the stomach and just health in general. My question is, do you have to make it yourself and how many bones do you need?

For example, would a roasted chicken carcass be enough to make the broth, or would you need more than that?

I know.homemade is always best, but I've lost 3 lbs this week and am now fighting to gain it back and barely have the energy to cook in general.

Any suggestions, recipes? No red meat, can't tolerate it and too afraid to try it again.

Like the one I make, including using a crockpot. Add lots of goodness with garlic and onions and don't forget the apple cider vinegar to help break down the bones.

I do know that some people buy their bone broth. Not knowing where you live, I thought I'd just share the online search I just did so you can at least see that: /goo.gl/ROa6TA

Yes a roasted chicken carcass is enough to make bone broth but 2 is even better. When you roast the chicken roast the neck also. After you eat the chicken you can put the carcass and neck in a bag and freeze it. Then next time you roast another chicken you can add this one and have the 2. Roasting the chicken gives a lot more flavor than just raw bones. So if you get the bones from a butcher, you can roast just the bones in the oven for awhile.

As for all the ingredients, those are not necessary and if you are having tummy troubles, I do not suggest adding anything but apple cider vinegar. Ratio is usually 2 tbsp per gallon of water. So it isn't much really. I put mine in a crockpot and let it go on low for 10-12 hours. I have a girlfriend that lets hers go for 2 days. I just don't like electrical things running when I am sleeping. So this is your choice but do at least 10 hours.

Before the broth cools you can strain it. I use cheesecloth and a strainer. The last thing I want is any bones in my broth.

I put the strained broth in freezer containers and let it sit. The fat will come to the top and make a nice congealed topping. I am not a fan of fat or oily tasting broth so I skim off a lot of this. However this step is not mandatory, your choice. (Your doggie will love this on their food, probably your cat too.)

Then you are ready to seal and freeze. Or you can just put it in the fridge for consumption. Ladle out some into a cup and microwave or put a lot in a saucepan and heat.

I like this bland - just chicken bone broth. No added salt or spices.

Try to use organic or pastured chicken/bones. Pesticides in the grains fed to conventionally raised animals (which bioaccumulate in their meat and especially fat) will decimate your intestinal flora, just like antibiotics will.

A properly functioning gut with beneficial microbiota is essential to immune function.

Thank you for reminding me to make it again, haven't made bone broth for a while and really enjoy it as well as it being very nutritious for us and one of the foods we can eat without problems, being gluten, dairy and sugar free of course.

I took a tip from a cycling person in our office who has been making bone broth, has cleared up some of his allergies.

Organic frozen grass fed beef bones in the frozen section of Whole Foods.

I put them in a crock pot and let them cook and cook and cook.

What he does is break them down so the bone breaks down.

You don't have to cook them that long.

Then fix it up with whatever spices/herbs suit your fancy.

As an aside...
I usually don't eat meat, and the smell was so bad my spouse put it in the garage...ha, ha, ha..


My body is craving meat... but I just can't seem to make myself eat it... I can tolerate shrimp, and some fish.

I almost threw up when I ate some local, organic, grass fed beef itself and gave up.

Weird to feel your body craving red meat, but when you try and eat it, it makes one feel like puking. so, going to just flow with out eating it and trust another path will open.

Can you eat chicken or turkey, Mulit? That might be a better option. Some with tick-borne infections, specifically RMSF, develop an alpha gal allergy, which is something that is in red meat. So maybe stay away from red meat and try some poultry?

Oh man, thank you all so much!!!! I threw away a chicken carcass 2 weeks ago because I was overwhelmed with trying to make the bone broth but I will not make that mistake again!

PeteZa, no fat for me. My system doesn't digest very well, and is even worse when I'm like this, so thanks for the tip, I will definitely skim the fat off.

Multi, I always throw.up when I eat red meat now, even the grass fed organic. But I know exactly what you mean, and it just tastes soooooo good. I like mine on the grill, with a little salt and a baked potato to soak up any juice. Mmmmmmmmmm, it's been so long, grrr

Traveler, I live in Central Massachusetts. about 10 mins away from the "geographical center of MA", so when I say central, we are central!

Thankfullt, knock on wood, I can still eat organic chicken, and fish. On the bad side, everything I put in my system these past couple of days has not been agreeing with me.

New LLMD and naturopath appts in mid-July, can't come soon enough......

Bone broth is amazing. Pantsface, you may want to check around locally as you might be able to find some nice quality grass fed broth already made. I found some here and bought a ton of it and froze it.

I love the containers of Pacific Organic Turkey Bone Broth. It is mellow and nice to drink any time of the day. The chicken has too much salt 9and spices) in it for me. But the Turkey is awesome. Great shelf life too. And is one of those box containers. I think it is even in Walmart. I get it at my health food store and if you don't see it, ask if you can order it. Many times if you order a case you can get a discount.

Couple other of quick things PantsFace as your gut seems quite upset - try adding a tablespoon of Bragg's Apple Cider Vinegar and see if that helps. Has worked wonders for me. Also, I'm sure you're already doing this, but take a very high quality probiotic multiple times a day. I'm currently using Prescript Assist and I have gone from nasty city (I'll spare you the details!) a few months ago when I was using antibiotics to regular as rain :) Good luck!!

Do be sure to start the ACV (apple cider vinegar) at a low dose as well - around 1 tablespoon or less - as it also helps to detox the body and increase digestive enzymes. When I first started using it, I needed to eat very soon after I took the ACV.

Bragg's apple cider vinegar drinks are wonderful too. I love all the flavors and refrigeration not needed. Hooked on the grape one now.
