A friend tells me tonight she got a bull's eye rash a week ago - best advice???

I am so familiar with lyme treatments when the disease has progressed, but what is the absolute BEST advice to give my friend who told me tonight she got a bull's eye rash a week ago, and has done nothing, and has no symptoms?

i told her if she still had the rash to take a photo of it

i do know she needs to treat - if she goes with doxy, it would have to be for 3 months, right? but it is in the middle of summer, so I am thinking a cephalesporin may be best instead OR

go with herbs - astralagus is best, correct (or is it already too late)? or do astralagus and antibiotics?

Advice please!!!

According to Lyme Treatment Guidelines (Burrascano):

Bullseye rash with no other symptoms is to treat until symptom and sign free for at least one month with a six week minimum.

I'm thinking astragalus in addition to antibiotics would be good.

To prevent infection (pg. 216, Healing Lyme, Second Edition by Stephen Harrod Buhner)

In endemic areas: 1,000 mg Astragalus daily throughtout the year.

For duration of tick season: 3,000 mg Astragalus daily.

Liberal use of natural tick repellant before going outdoors.

At tick bite: Remove tick, liberally apply andropraphis tincture to bite site, cover with a moistened glob of bentonite clay, cover that with thin cotton, and leave on for twelve to twenty-four hours. (From reports, this seems to prevent active infection nearly every time.)

At tick bite: Homeopathic ledum 1M 3x daily for three days. (From reports, this also seems to work for some people.)

At appearance of rash: Homeopathic apis 30C 3x daily for three days and begin core protocol.

this is what Buhner suggests.

I would demand the 21 days of Doxycyline. After battling this infection for over a year, if I found a rash, I would go straight to the doctor and get the ABX. I actually know someone who did that and they never got symptoms.

21 days not enough - 6 week minimum (see guidelines posted in my first post)

I agree with Girlie,

You have been given some great advice between PeteZa and Girlies recommendation. They are both from extremely credible sources. I know it is summer, but I personally would be more paranoid not to stick to doxy due to its proven effectiveness. I would just make it a skin sunless summer. It's a small price to pay for the reassurance I would get.

She can also support for some antibiotical herbs etc like Japanese knotweed etc that I believe would have no interaction with the doxy or astragulus. I'd be a little overly cautious and spend a couple extra hundred bucks now if you have to, to be aggressive with it before that doesn't become an option.

What I would give to have caught it early and knock it out with 6 weeks of antibiotics!
May seem like a lot...but so much better than the risk of chronic lyme....

I would definitely take Doxy for 6 weeks. Better safe than sorry!

i know, this friend of mine is very fortunate to have gotten the rash. she is going to see her regular Dr tmrw. I will give her the info. Thanks so much all! sorry i took so long to write back, but with the kids home for the summer, I am swamped! LOL

i read over the guidlines briefly, but still can't find the followiing info - she is on doxy, but i dont know the dose. Is 100mg twice a day sufficient for early stages? bc i know it is not enough when the person exhibits symptoms. thanks again!

Dr Burrascano's guidelines doesn't have different dosages for different stages...

He lists the antibiotic dosages on Page 18

200 mg twice daily - and up to 600 mg daily is sometimes is needed (per guidelines)

Most of the LLMD's prescribe 200 mg twice daily.

So she hasn't started treatment yet?

I would urge her to start before she starts getting more symptoms...

oh, no, she started last week, but she isn't answering my question, so i don't know what her dose is. IT is probably just 100mg twice a day.

she is going in tomorrow to try to extend it another 3 weeks (she is on day 10 of the 21 day Rx - I convinced her to make sure she treats for at least 6 weeks, but I am worried she isn't on a high enough dose)

although I am sending her this info, I highly doubt the Dr will increase the dose. =( All we can do is try right??

8 weeks, Bactrim

That is what our one LLMD does not matter what. Bactrim covers more of the coinfections than Doxy apparently.

I took 21 days' worth of 100mg BID doxy that I started the day after I pulled the tick out of my abdomen.

That was back in July 2014.

It clearly wasn't enough.
