Treat EBV first?

Hello! I recently tested Igenex positive for Lyme. I was on amoxicillin for six weeks and dapsone for one (had an adverse reaction to it). My doctor just switched me to doxy and ceftin along with grapefruit seed extract and a host of other detox supplements. My active EBV numbers are also through the roof. I spoke with an integrative doctor and she expressed that based on my testing results, she is more concerned about the EBV and viral load than the Lyme right now and her recommendation would be to not take antibiotics and instead take herbal remedies such as colloidal silver and BLT (not sure what that is) and focus on building up my immune system. She said that she had noticed that many of her Lyme patients get worse with antibiotics because they further break down an already depleted immune system. That makes sense to me, but I'm nervous to completely go off antibiotics right now. At one point she said it's possible that this is all EBV and may not be Lyme at all. Just wanted to see if anyone has any thoughts on this and also if anyone else had to get their EBV under control before they could effectively go after the Lyme.

Hi, I also have EBV... and it is just sitting there, not really getting better... I think she is right. I have a lot of pain in my lymph nodes, having fever, feeling horrible... I guess that is EBV.
But maybe you can paralelly treat Lyme with Doxy and take herbs... This is how Lyme doctor treats my daughter, with both but not maxiumum dossages... and then you need to report how you feel and adjust doses... good luck winning the battle.

Hi Snarf. I agree with your doc. EBV can make you feel horrible and some symptoms can mimic Lyme. It is true that it is best to get the viral loads down first.

I, too, am dealing with EBV and I decided to change up about 3 weeks ago and really up the ante to go after my viral loads. Unfortunately in my case I could not continue to use monolaurin which I was doing very well with. So onto the next remedies. My doctor also thought that getting the viral loads down would make a large impact in how I feel.

Yes building up the immune system is critical.

As far as colloidal silver, I've done that for a long time and I just don't think it's made much of an impact. But we are all different.

Sounds like you have a very smart doc.

Thank you for the responses! My first doctor put me on the new antibiotics (doxy and ceftin). I decided to get a second opinion and that was the one suggesting backing off all antibiotics and going after the viral loads. Now I basically have two completely different opinions from two doctors in the same practice. Serves me right for getting a second opinion! So it sounds like it might be beneficial to hit the antivirals first and go off of antibiotics completely?

Snarf you can actually do both. Have you tried monolaurin? It's very effective against EBV and Candida. You work up slowly. Starting with 500mg and eventually getting up to at anywhere between 6500-9000 mg and then working back down to a maintenance dose of 1,000 mg for awhile.

wow this could be my story too!
my lyme doctor has said the same thing to me, and i thought "is this really the case?" i couldn't believe it when i saw the symptoms of EBV can do to us once i read up on it, and how much they can act like lyme. apparently the lyme lets the EBV become active and they keep each other alive. My doc thought that treating it could be the key since im having a slow recovery.

mines also super active and they want me to do the antiviral IV (since i have a sensitive stomach and they are not sure i will cope on the oral antivirals) it would mean 3 x a week, IVs for 4 weeks. Then he wants me to go back to my lyme abx and blast that with some iv, and see where we are afterwards.
i to am worried to stop my abx. i stopped before and it only took 10 days for me to get every symptom i had before treatment back (im 6 months into treatment but been sick for 2 years) so he's told me i can stay on my meds and do the antiviral ivs at the same time, but he thinks ill herx so much ill soon change my mind about staying on my oral abx (which is also amox btw)

How very interesting. Is it even possible, to be positive on the test, but actually don't have Borelia? Is it possible that it is EBV who actually gives positive result?

I agree that if you have already started abx to stay on them at the same doses (unless your tx is particularly aggressive then I would lower doses) and start reducing viral load ASAP. Krimpet mentioned good natural remedies. Lysine also. Beyond Balance has a couple of antiviral formulas that work well and there are other brands of comprehensive tinctures.

But if you have a history of EBV causing problems, recurring mono, and/or other viral loads natural antivirals might not work for you - they didn't for me. I tried 2 different Rx at high doses before I made progress. It took me a year to start feeling better w/out viral flares and I was finally able to transition from Rx to IMN-VII, which is working well.

With any antiviral Rx, which is processed through the liver you need to support with milk thistle seed or burdock root. And detox carefully. Viruses aren't being killed with antivirals, their activity is being suppressed but detoxing helps your body in many ways.
